Yes.

The NHL is $9.99 a month.

The NBA is I think $100 for the season. 6 month season or so = $15 per.

NFL of course is like $250. 16 games for $250 is $15 per.

None of those include playoffs either, just regular season.

I think as it stands currently for Riot it is a flat out retarded business model pissing away absolute TONS of money for nothing right now by letting the game be broadcast anywhere for free.

Just allow advertisements and product placement on the stream. Boom. You're instantly making money in a place you hadn't made money in years.

If you think a great number of people are going to pay those prices to watch LCS, you're crazy.

Now way in hell I'm paying a monthly subscription to watch pro LoL.

ETA: Games go as the pro/competitive scene goes. Mark my words, if Riot charges $100 per season to watch pro-play, it will be the death of League of Legends.

Copying a pro sports model is definitely the way to go
It's definitely not because it's not a similar relationship between viewer and sport. The demographic is entirely different. The entire culture is different. Streaming is already ingrained into the gaming community as free entertainment, and no other esport charges to watch a stream. You're burning a ton of bridges and in the long run I think it loses money.

That really doesn't have anything to do with the media side.

Every Pro sports league in the World charges to watch their content online.

And you're still missing the big picture here, which is television, and soon. Very soon. Already been rumors of ESPN deals for months.

It does when you lose a large chunk of your viewers the moment you decide to charge for content they've been getting free for 6 years.

No one even knows if they will charge.

All anyone knows right now is that League is done with Twitch, YouTube, etc, and will be moving over to MLBAM streaming services.

Beyond that no one knows. MLBAM charges for their content, so the safe assumption is there will be a charge of some kind.

Don't forget it's still Riot's channel.

It’s unclear if the app’s users would have to purchase a subscription, but it’s possible that Riot Games could offer a fee-based option with exclusive content or in-game benefits, van Dreunen said.

This possibility makes sense, and goes along with Riot wanting to implement team based items to generate in game revenue for teams, selling team specific skins and content. Optional.

That's my point. I don't think they can get away with charging.

MAYBE in Korea where e-sports are akin to the NFL, NBA, etc... here in the states.

But otherwise, I think it will only hurt Riot in the long run.

A nice middle ground is tapping into the ad revenue (like Drewbie previously mentioned), but still providing free coverage.

True.
However, it's another new champ with a dash.
Just like a nid jump on a 10sec cooldown. Free flashes with a cool down.

They might as well just make all champions have a free flash on cooldown. Ekko, Camille, New Talon, Kat, Zed, Fizz's troll pole. All of these assassins with gap closers just force in another tank meta and further force control mages and suppress ADC's.

And the jungle changes have continually worked to punish clearing.
And now, Shyvana got reworked to some stupid... kill the dragons passive. wtf.

They really have no idea wtf to do. The game just keeps getting worse.

Rumors at Worlds were true, credit Jacob Wolfe from ESPN cuz he got a lot of shite about that article.

ROX Tigers disbanding, GorillA, Pray, Kuro, and the coaching staff made available for transfer contact.

Peanut and Smeb already have new teams apparently.
