In 1980, my brothers and I started begging in October for an Intellevision that Christmas. It was $279 (or north of a $1000 in today dollars when you include tax).

Word of advice, take the console out before Christmas and download all the games and updates. Your son will thank you when he’s able to play right away.

Solid advice right there. I have last version of Xbox. We took it out a while back after 4-5 years of sitting in a cabinet. We went to play madden and all it did was update. Back sitting in closet.

The base series S has enough storage for a couple games and he can download and delete and space necessitates.

bullshite...im having to buy new storage this year cause games like call of duty take up so much space.

Get the Series S if you are looking to save a little money. You can always hook up external storage to transfer games to and from the console for cheap..and the older Xbox one games will play right from that storage

True but with one issue, you cannot play the game from external storage unless you get the specific thing that plugs into the S' micro connector. Right now my S is only big enough for elden ring and starfield.

Kids download and play a lot of games, pay a bit more for the X will save you from hearing how he cannot download new game in 2 months.

The S does not have a big enough hard drive for a serious gamer that likes to play two or three games at a time.

Just a thought...

Xbox's naming conventions are so damn confusing. That's enough reason for me to stick with playstation.

This. I bought a PS3 before I had kids. We had a PS4 for 4 or 5 years and now we have a PS5.

Meanwhile, XBox 360 or X-Box-s or X-Box-X...? frick all that. I'm old now. How am I supposed to keep up with that?

The new S has the 1Tb drive like the X does..

get him the series x instead. it's currently $449 with an additional $49 off if you check the coupon box. it will allow him to play 4k bluray movies as well. the system overall has better specs.

At least you didn’t buy him a dvd player like I did 2 years ago for my son. I hate technology

correct answer. get the X.

i would say, make sure you ask him if he’s sure about wanting an xbox vs playstation. he should get what console his friends play on. then…

plug it in a day or two ahead. let it update. buy Madden 24 on the xbox. Let it update. set him up with an Xbox Live account including GamePass. ($15/month). He’ll have a ton of storage, the better specs, and access to a massive library of free games.

this is what he wants.

Just get the Series X for 499.00 It covers the storage issue (512 GB will get filled fast) and will run games better.

You can casty all you want - we wanted to watch Apollo 13 with the kiddo this weekend. Every streaming service had it - (if I wanted to rent or buy for a minimum of $4.99).

So, I fished out the DVD and off we went. I keep physical media (and buy physical media) for that reason exactly.

I'm more confused now than when I started the thread.

My son has a Nintendo Switch that he plays Fortnite on, but of course the Switch doesn't do Madden.

He wants an Xbox because that's what his best friend has and they play Madden on his when he goes to his house.

My son is 9, so I don't think he needs the best available console with the most storage (We have to manage the storage on his switch so I understand having to delete games and Apps when he wants a new game). He just needs an "xbox to play Madden".

I feel like the S will be enough.

ETA: More votes for the X

If he is only going to play 1-3 games then the series x is fine. But today's games are GB hogs. We went with the Series X and still ended up getting an external drive.

If he has game arse I think madden is available on it but check on that. It's always cheaper to buy the year over the month to month, and keep in mind he'll hit you up for 3-4 games a year that's not on game arse so I'd spring for the year.

When I was a kid we'd hit blockbuster a couple times a month and I'd rent a game so I kinda look at game arse like a blockbuster replacement. Lots of games he won't put many man hours in but well worth it.

When it comes to storage space 500gb isn't alot, but I wouldn't tell you to buy the 1tb xbox just cause that's alot more than if you bought him an external hard drive he could plug in, which is what I have.
