The Sephiroth who is the antagonist of FF7 and the Remake is actually Jenova wearing his body like a suit.
Think of Jenova like the entity in the movie The Thing. She drove the Cetra to the brink of extinction by masquerading as their loved ones, killing them, then mimicking her victims. Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

I mean, it’s possible, but I think has a bit too much of a smartass streak to him and he was doing some really fricked up shite in Nibelheim. I think Sephiroth’s mind is still with him even if he’s batshit insane compared to years back.
