Having attacks on triangle and circle just seems crazy. Also R1 sheathing your weapon?

Once I figured out how to charge up the spirit blade, it was better. Stuff runs away mid fight so much though that you loose those charges unless you helm breaker at the right time.

Regular attacks charge it then you R2 over and over right?

Unless I am totally missing something.

Yes. It took me a bit to realize other R2 variations (R2+triangle or circle) interacted with the gauge differently.

I get your issue with the story missions multiplayer. The group play is confusing and difficult there.

But this is actually an improvement. In past MH games you could only do story missions solo.

The multiplayer with this game really starts after the story is over.

The biggest issue is the inability to change directions once an attack is initiated and the enemies are agile and always moving. I should be able to turn with an attack as an enemy moves.

It’s the biggest noticeable flaw in the game’s mechanics.

I don't see how that is a flaw, it is part of the game design. You are supposed to learn the moves of the monsters and know when to attack. Starting an attack when it will move, should give you a penalty. It is very similar to Dark souls in that way. You may be getting away with this now but 5 star hunts and up will destroy you if you spam attacks.

I am using the hammer as my weapon right now and I am on the Diablos hunt. Just killed Rathalos.

I'm about to go down to the Rotten Vale, have done the majority of the side quests, bounties and investigations. Been using the charge blade. Its an awesome weapon once you learn all the mechanics. Also using dual blades for a change up. Both of those weapons shred! Been playing with a group that have played past titles and they said not to upgrade armor until you get one of the last sets, just upgrade your weapon.

Its important to talk to everyone that has an exclamation point over their head, those are quests. Like the chef, you can unlock different recipes and have stronger buffs from the food.

So can anyone actually explain how to “co-op” the story? It feels a bit lonely so far.

Only way to co-op from the story missions is to get to the cut scene in the mission, then shoot up an SOS flare.

All optional quest and repeat story quest you can join from the town.

The story missions are normally a single player only thing in MH so this is new. I actually recommend playing the story solo, it will help you get better. When quest become high rank that is when multiplayer is best IMO.

I know this isn't in the spirit of monster hunter, but I do wish there was more of a community aspect to the main hub, seeing other players, checking out gear. Maybe down the road it's something that can get patched in.

Seeing on twitter the developers are saying they could add a character creation redo if enough players want it. I have a few things I'd like to change on mine.

ETA I might be trying to fill the gap left when I decided to stop playing FFXIV

You actually could always see peoples gear in the online hub. There was two hubs in old games. Online and offline. Online you could see it, but back then it was 4 people to each online hub. I think it is 16 now.

I have not finished the story yet so I have not jumped into multiplayer but I think it is still like this. I assume the top floor ship area is like the online hub from old games. You should be able to see players there, as I saw the old arm wrestling and drinking social things up there. You will spend way more time in that area after the story is done.

I went to this community place last night and I assumed that's where I could see other players, but it was empty.

Well yea it will be empty unless one of the 16 people in your online session wanders in there randomly. Or you chat with them to go up. I assume it will be more populated up there once people get to endgame and are done with their story. In old games you were forced into those spaces when playing online. This could be a down side to the new option of playing online even when in the offline hub. Less people actually hanging out in the social space.

You also can create a clan up there (squad). Which is a good way of getting people to help with quest.
I can start one on PS4 if you guys would like.

Gives you time to use whetstones and re buff.
A pretty common thing most monster hunter vets know is when the monster is weak and goes to sleep at it's nest you should drop large barrel bombs on it. Then set them off. It will do massive damage. Comes in handy on tougher fights as they go into rage mode when weak. That is unless you just capture it.

I have learned that capturing is much better than killing.

yeah, i suck at it lol

enjoying trying out all the different weapons, i'm sure i'll decide which one i'm sticking with eventually

switch axe is current weapon of choice

Same here. I played Monster Hunter years ago on the Wii U and used the dual blades. I started with the Switch Axe but I am terrible. I rule in the Training Ground but as soon as I'm fighting a real monster shite goes downhill quickly. Thinking of switching to the Gun Lance for the shield.

Edit: I'm very early in the game. I just restored the camp and killed the Kulu, but fainted several times encountering the T-rex with the webbed tail.
