Microsoft has announced it will natively support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10, and other "online multiplayer networks." The move effectively opens the Xbox Live platform so that can interact with Sony's PlayStation Network, among others.

The announcement was made in a post on Xbox.com, in which Chris Charla, director of ID@Xbox, said "it’s up to game developers to support this feature" and noted that players will "always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players."

"In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well," Charla explained.

"This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks."

The first game to support the functionality is Psyonix's Rocket League, which will allow Xbox One and PC players to matchmake against each other. Microsoft extended "an open invitation for other networks to participate as well."

This is the kumbaya-come-to-Jesus moment the peasants have REALLY needed.

I see PC to console getting this. I'm not so sure about PS4 to Xbox one.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading somewhere that XBL isn't actually the internet, just their own network, making cross platform impossible. I'm assuming that's no longer the case now.

It really is needed for games like Titanfall and Battlefront. The PC population starts out small and dwindles to almost nothing within a few months because PC gamers just don't care about casual shooters.

FFXI did this too. PS2, PC, and XBOX 360 all together (although they are going to drop 360 and PS2 support very soon)

XIV has PS4 and PC together too.

I hope it happens but I doubt it will anytime soon

Console to PC isn't the point of this.

I know. I was just saying because everyone else seemed to be pointing stuff out that has been happening.

As for console to console I am actually okay with that more than PC to console. At least for shooters. I do not want to play against keyboard and mouse.

Unreal Tournament III had PS3/PC cross play, but I don't know if people actually played it.

Famous GB youtuber sweat said he played with a controller on PC for a good while and didn't have any problems.

He may not have had "problems" but I would say chances are high he didn't do as well as he could have otherwise.

Exactly. It isn't that you can't be successful. I just don't like knowing somebody has an advantage on me.

If you are a better player, the controls don't matter most of the time. Being familiar with the maps and other players tendencies make much more of a difference than what you use to put the crosshairs on the bad guys. And your internet connection of course.

Most people in the Master Race will want to argue that, but it's the truth. I only play PC now and have no problem admitting that.
