re: Kotaku: what happened with Anthem and what's wrong with Bioware

I’m not going to sit here crying for BioWare but I will say that any executive who mandates that all development be done with one uniform development platform be tied down and forced to use it.
I find that a lot of mandates on how work is to be done are pushed by people who have no goddamn clue what it takes to do something. They think “Hey, we own this, so it is a better deal to use it!”, not “Jesus, it takes a week to do what takes a minute to do with development tool X”.
Every platform has its quirks and those quirks can make it totally unusable depending on what you are trying to do.

Sure. Let's not fix unfair labor practices. Just get another job. Easy enough.
In the meantime, no more games to play.
This is a good point actually, I actually think that developers will unionize which is result in just a poor quality, more expensive games. This is all happening because small to mid sized studios are being bought up by activision and EA. As a gaming base we really should do more to reward the smaller studios and not the big conglomerate studios. This means not buying the yearly sports release games or blackops/modern warfare. Unfortunately, I dont think that will be enough, then EA will go and try to buy Guerrilla Games or some other small studio.

What will end up happening is that these developers may sell their developed properties to the big companies but not their development houses.
The best comparison I could make is probably Sony’s second party developers like Singletrac.
IIRC, Sony ended up with the rights to Singletrac’s series like Twisted Metal but the key employees formed a new company which ended up doing Twisted Metal Black after Sony’s next developer (989?) shite the bed on TM 3 and 4.

100% what will happen

It’s pretty funny because they bitch about making the game that wins the best of for that year, but the game was actually pretty shitty.

The last 10% of the game is excruciatingly dull

Inquisition was better than DA2 in every imaginable way
DA2 was the laziest developed AAA game ever, in my mind
Origins was better than both, though

If I was a super rich investor I would poach tons of Blizz, Sucker Punch, and Bungie devs from the big boys. Then I would have them develop a new IP from the ground up. Make it amazing and have legs for longevity. Then sell the product to the highest bidder for publishing rights when entering beta phases, with the contract stipulating that all game design decisions stay with the dev group, not the publisher.
Worst case scenario is you publish it independently on PC to recoup costs. If the game is good enough, someone will bite. Poaching those devs should insure the game is at the very least "good", if not great.

I mean it sounds terrible lol. But are these people being forced to work for these companies against their will?
As far as I know they can change professions. There will always be people willing to work for less and more hours in a field like gaming.
That doesn't seem like a good idea. Game studios are more often closing than opening. Lots of people looking for work.

I don't really see a way for any of those big companies to truly go away, but then again Konami is largely irrelevant.
And Guerrilla Games is not a small studio (200+ employees) and they're owned by Sony.

I hope you at some point realize how brain dead that response always is with you.

But I feel the only way Bioware survives is if they can gain their freedom from EA like Bungie did from Activision.
I can't see it going any other way, either.

What's surprising from that article is that Bioware had removed flying from Anthem in 2016. They only put it back in for the demo to try and impress the EA big wig. Flying is the only thing Bioware got right.
