Just like 3D TV, VR is NOT going to catch on

The reason 3D TV didn’t make it was because, as I predicted early on, nobody was going to wear glasses while watching television.
But that’s not the case with VR. People will wear a headset for VR. What they will not be willing to do is use a headset in conjunction with a PC to play games. There will never be a successful market for that.
VR does stand a chance if the games can be played headset only. The PCVR is not sustainable and will fail.

They need to continue developing it and make it where it’s just a pair of glasses. I think in its current form it won’t catch on long term but if they release glasses and somehow make a device that lets you walk around with no issues that would be huge. They’re already working on a glove that you can wear that simulates touch.

I think the result is somewhat in between. VR isn’t going to take over and dominate everything like META is betting on, but it will eventually settle in as its own sustainable niche market with dedicated fans and companies catering to that niche.

Also I think oculus and PSVR is really helping with low cost of entry and ease of setup.

The comparison doesn't really hold up because 3D TV wasn't giving you anything different. It's just TV with 3D slapped on.
VR games are much different and are usually unique titles on their own. If there was nothing special/unique provided by VR, you would have a point. Some games can be played in both VR and non-VR, but a lot of VR titles are specifically designed with VR in mind.

I think VR has already surpassed whatever it is that 3D TVs were able to achieve.

you're definitely going to need something like this.

I mostly agree with you and the second poster who says that the wearable hardware has to get a lot more compact and light.
I’m just not sure it will be any more than a novelty - remember the summer of Pokemon Go? Entire LSU campus was obsessed, and then it was over.

???
Pokemon Go has been growing in popularity, not decreasing.

But VR isn't ready to be a mass market product. It's made good strides though. Companies just have to be willing to make smaller profits from the projects to invest in growing the userbase for the medium.

I can't see VR catching on for the masses as far as gaming goes.
There are just not enough good games.

My dream is special cameras close the field at sporting events and you can wander around live via your VR headset.

I don't see mass adoption anytime soon but I don't think that it can be thrown in with the failed 3d tv. It's always going to at least have a niche market.

I'd much rather sport AR goggles than VR goggles.

Could just be inflation

Huh. Must have really taken hold with the younger kids.
I retired after catching a Pikachu in the bathroom of the PF Chang’s in Town Center.

It will always be a novelty item. Most actual gamers aren’t interested in VR.

Not true at all. And I’d say it’s catching pretty big considering every other person I know owns an Oculus. The new PlayStation VR is going to boost its popularity even more. If you’ve played one and seen the potential, you’d understand how VR has caught on so much.

The most popular headset on the market (the Quest 2) plays games standalone or you can hook it up to a PC . I think this hybrid model will likely continue to be the most popular. As far as PCVR being unsustainable I mean its a niche market but its been profitable for both Sony and Valve. Look at the sales data on the Valve Index and you can see its done quite well as has the PSVR...
so Im not sure how you can say with confidence that only stand alone headsets are sustainable.

The thing about VR is it doesn't have to have PC graphics to be good and fun. Most are cartoon graphics that you'd never play on a PC. Once you slap that VR headset on, and you feel like your in the game, everything changes. Ever since we've gotten the Oculus I really haven't felt like playing the PS5 or PC. If I have a time allotment to play a game each day or sometime during the week I'm putting the Oculus on because it's way more fun than any PS5 or PC game IMO.
