Is there a recommended playthrough order for Assassin's Creed?

I've already played AC Odyssey and AC Valhalla.

Microsoft was having an Assassin's Creed sale for 80% off the old games so I bought every game in the series for a total of $80.

Should I play them in historical chronological order, or is there a special order, or just do it by release date?

You want to do it this way because the overarching story of the games isn't based on the chronological order of the games. It's based on the modern day sequences.

You could probably skip the first one. I haven't played it but I've heard it's hard to go back to after playing the more modern games. The controls are also a little different in all of the earlier games prior to Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla, but I still have fun with them. It isn't so different that you won't be able to get the hang of it.

ETA: The only one I played, but did not enjoy, was AC Unity. I played it all the way through just to see how it tied into the rest of the series, and I can't say that it advanced much at all. They did a great job with Paris though.

The overarching plot is a disjointed mess. Just find the time periods you like and ignore the present day crap.

Play Black Flag after you play the first 3.

Play Origins, it is more like the two you have played and in Ancient Egypt!

The modern-day storyline in 2, Brotherhood, Revelations, and 3 is pretty awesome. OP should definitely play those in that order.

4 and Syndicate only loosely tie to that modern-day story, but are great games.

Does Black Flag hold up well? I just ordered Valhalla today but after I may give BF a try.

It will probably seem chunky compared to the new ones, but it was a cool location (Caribbean) and theme (Pirates). Naval warfare was legit fun.

I've been playing Rogue lately, and I feel like it has held up pretty good. I imagine Black Flag holds up too, as they're pretty similar games in terms of playstyle.

I LOVED hunting the white whale. Probably spent way too much time on that game.

I mean you can skip one but i would [play it.

The Ezio collection is the best set of games with 2, Brotherhood an Revelations.

3 isn't great and 4 Black Flag is fantastic.

ACI - I would watch a youtube recap or read the wiki summary.

AC2, Brotherhood and Revelations - best story for me in the series. In the middle of playing through it right now for the billionth time.

AC3 - on the fence. My least favorite of the series but probably worth a play through. I replayed it once and will never do it again.

AC4 - really good and fun to play. Played through multiple times.

Rouge - I liked it more than most. Very similar to AC4 the way it's set up and plays. I've played through it probably 3 total times.

Syndicate - I liked it but this is when the series starts to get a little old. But the movement of the players is better and having 2 characters is different. I've replayed it twice since the first time.

Unity - best movement by far up to that point. Paris is cool and the game is better than reviews. But the story is okay at best and the gameplay has gotten old. Replayed it once but that's likely it going forward.

I liked Origins but only got halfway through a replay before I got bored. Too much stuff to do a second time for me.

I did play through Odyssey twice. Loved the setting and will probably play through it again one day. I did the first play through with Alexios and the second with Kassandra.

Valhalla was good, but not sure if it's something I want to play through again. Maybe in a couple of years.

The three new ones were really good, but they're so full of stuff it's hard to grind through them again.

I just started playing Valhalla last night. I called it a night after I got the assassin blade. Anyone have any tips I should know before I get really into it? Best skills, should I upgrade my early gear or save it for better stuff?

You will appreciate them more if you play through them in the order that they were released.

I want to do the same as OP but have time restraints with work/family so plan on keeping up with the storyline by watching the cutscenes on youtube for the games I choose not to play through. The first Assasins Creed will definitely be done this way. Not sure about the others.

I’m a huge fan of the historical settings so not sure which others would be better to just watch the cutscenes.

All gear is effectively the same in this game outside of cosmetics which is lame as frick.

I prefer rocking two spears though. It’s OP.

I loved the trailer for 3. One of the most badass game trailers out there.

Stuff doesn't really get drastically better. So pick a set of armor that you like the perks and looks of and upgrade that. Same with weapons. Weight matters a little, but not much.

As far as skills/abilities. If you do the side quest type stuff and clear a region before moving on like I did. You'll max out your skills pretty quickly. I don't remember the exact skill tree (it's massive), but I tried to beeline things like health and adrenaline boosts.

ETA: Also, to OP, if you're going to do a playthrough I'd recommend them in order of release.

The gameplay changes drastically and the first 3ish (not counting the Ezio trilogy) will be a bit of a slog. But worth it, imo.
