Is Red Dead Redemption 2 the best game ever made?

I played it when it came out. Man, I loved that game. I've been watching old youtube videos of people playing just to experience the game again. It is still an amazing game.
The RDR2 world is so well made. The amount of detail the developers put into the world. It's beautiful and diverse from mountains to the swamps. The graphics, the writing and voice acting are top notch. It is so immersive and fun. It's like being in a movie and you're the main character.
I vote yes. The only other game like this that comes close to me is Half-Life 2. That game gave me the same feels.

I'll still go with morrowind, but red dead was absolutely more polished.
Something about the unlimited possibilities in morrowind really does take it to another level.

I remember really struggling to get through the first few hours of the game. It felt very slow (not the plot necessarily but the movements of the characters and having to hold down a button to pick shite up...which seems commonplace these days and why I appreciate Elden Ring so much). Once you get out of that initial camp and being forced to ride from point A to point B in order to learn the mechanics of the game, it was an absolute blast.

Hell of a game.
Ghost of Tsushima might be better.
The story of Arthur was a great ride, and the John epilogue was a nice touch.
And as batshit as Dutch was, he was a great character. The characters were really fleshed out well in RDR2.

I don't think it's the best game ever made, but it's arguably the best game Rockstar ever made.

It's my favorite game of all time, because I love a good story. It has relatable themes of change, love, and loss. As mentioned, the writing and characters are top notch.
The gameplay in Elden Ring is more fun, but the story really doesn't mean much to me. Also, when the game lets you create a character, it's hard to write a good story for it. Elden Ring is still in my top 10 of all time, though.

No lol, not even close. Not even the best R* game. It did a lot of things extremely well, but it fumbled a lot of stuff too

Just out of curiosity and not trying to start a debate... but what did the game fumble?
I'll admit that I'm not all that picky or cynical about games. I enjoy them pretty easily if I like the game, and I don't normally look for faults too much as I play. I don't play many games so I may not have enough to compare it to.

I generally dont like prequels. Narratively boring. I did enjoy Arthur’s character and his arc. Wish they would have made these games in narrative order because it’s strange to have zero Arthur references in rdr 1 when he is a big contributor to John’s survival and an influence on his own redemptive arc. Nitpicky, but whatever.
The overreliance on detail sometimes detracts from gameplay. Watching Arthur lumber around a room gathering tin cans and tobacco got old quickly.
It’s a pretty game and some of the set pieces were nice, but it didn’t leave a lasting impression.

Its been a while but I seem to remember a few dumb forced gameplay mechanics for the sake of realism that felt like chores. Just vaguely though.
The story and execution is incredible though.
Does anyone know if this has a PS5 patch ? I'd love to play this in 60 fps

This is probably not going to make sense but it’s so good and realistic that I only played like 30% of it
It takes awhile to do anything because the motions are so fluid

A few things
- The moment to moment gameplay. Their commitment to realism and immersion really hurt a lot of basic mechanics and slowed things down too much. Every single little thing has a bespoke animation that takes up so much time, looting is miserable (whoever came up with Hold A to pick shite up needs to be shot, I remember missions where I killed 30 people and would just roll my eyes when it came time to loot their corpses), every mission has you riding for 7-8 minutes on a horse listening to someone ramble, lots of elements that were just completely superfluous and inconsequential (all of the different buffs and ammos types that you never remotely have to worry about). Can't even run in your own fricking camp, have to spend 20 seconds to clean each gun, have to keep your horse happy, have to manage all kinds of trivial survival elements. It's all realistic and cool...for about 5 minutes. Then it just becomes tedious.
- Doesn't play well in a technical sense. Floaty, imprecise movement (like every other R* game), dated shooting mechanics, bad cover system,
- The writing is all over the place. For the first 4 chapters, you're on a loop where things are going swell and then the gang has to skip town and start over. Things finally start to pick up steam and the story really feels like it's moving forward, and then the game sends you to that goofy island chapter that just completely kills any semblance of good pacing. The game peaked with the Gray/Braithwaite chapter. I remember thinking during the assault of Braithwaite manor "omg this is gonna be the best game ever made, we're so early and I'm already getting goosebump story moments." And then that moment never got topped
It was a tremendous accomplishment in that it's somehow the most expansive, yet most detailed game ever made. Technically marvelous, some of the best voice acting and performances ever, some truly amazing "stick with you" moments (both major setpieces and quiet moments). Unfortunately, immersion and detail take center stage at the expense of the gameplay. It just doesn't respect the player's time and it taught me that some things have to be "video gamey" to maintain the fun factor. Let me just run in a house and mash A for a few seconds to pick everything up. I don't need to hold A 10x to open every cabinet and drawer and then hold A again for each item to watch a 1.5 sec pickup animation. I don't want a 10min horse ride soliloquy before every mission.
As spectacular as the game was, it was just tedious

I've seen this same sentiment in so many posts on other sites. It's just tiring. The writing and setpieces aren't enough to offset the moment to moment tedium
I never even finished the epilogue tbh. Did everything possible and finished the main game, and I just couldn't be bothered to do the epilogue after. Was so desperate to play something else by that point. Need to go back and finish it.

Haha, I just started a replay of it.
Yes, it is just one of the best games ever.

its a great game, not close to best all time. hell im not sure if it would make my personal top 10.
i think recency bias makes people forget about games of previous generations too easily and dismiss them as contenders for this coveted title.
i think carson outline well some things that keep it down.

Pretty much my feeling as well. I just kinda lost interest about halfway through and never had the urge to go back.
I recognize it was a great game...but it wasn't really for me. Sometimes it be like that.

I agree with pretty much everything you said. It's just one of those games that you have to prepare to play, mentally. You know it's going to take "x" amount of time for this or that, many of the things you pointed out, that are just tedious. If you've got the time for all that then, yeah, RDR2, in all it's detail is an absolute masterclass in storytelling, tone, detail and world building.
If you're someone who has a limited amount of time to sit down and play then it can deter you from wanting to launch the game at all.

It really helps when you have a plan. So many games, movies, etc these days, no one has a plan. With RDR2 you could always trust that there was a plan.

I’m in the minority of people who really did not like this game because it felt restrictive to me. I liked the first one more. Lost interest when the fast travel turned out to be arse. Best game ever is a very tough one, I do like big sandbox/open world RPG games
