WoW at 41?

Easily top 10

No Neverwinter?

Yeah, you lost me.

That's understandable. I don't think DD being the best is a particularly popular opinion but I loved having 2 players on each kart and being able to pass items back and forth to one another. Also, the second player could use their gamepad triggers to quickly make the kart slide left or right to avoid incoming items or obstacles. It was a really fun way to play multiplayer without having to split the screen and it required a decent amount of verbal communication. My wife and I loved it. Now that I have kids, I would love to be able to team up on a kart with my son or daughter for the same type of gameplay in Mario Kart 8, but it seems that was a one-game gimmick.

Regardless, Mario Kart (I'll even take 64) should be there somewhere.

Too low or high? I’d say that’s a good position for it.

Depends on how you look at it.

Everquest started, built, and perfected the MMORPG. WoW killed it. The MMORPG has been down hill ever since it was released and became super popular.

If we're talking some semblance of "most important," or "most influential," for as popular as the game is, both it's popularity and structure of video-game-as-theme-park basically killed a burgeoning genre.

Wolfenstein came first but Doom perfected it. Quake wouldn't exist without Doom.

Portal way too high

WOW way too low, as is LOL. Both massive games that have popularized essentially new genres. The games that do something new and are successful are always considered the best

Same reason, Pokémon Go belongs in the list. The game is shite, except for the craze it started and the completely different mechanic of bringing players together with augumented reality. That alone makes it top 100

Pokémon Yellow way too low. That game singlehandedly built the handheld game market. That was the only game in most people’s GameBoys. IOS and droid games wouldn’t be what they are today without Pokemon starting the handheld market

GTA V way too high. I don’t like the multiplayer, and I don’t think the story is as polished as other people do

And Halo isn’t top 10? It definitely deserves it. Halo changed the game for multiplayer

Agree to Disagree most likely. That's why I'm saying if we're talking "primacy" then the answer is Wolfenstein. If we're talking quality, Quake perfected Doom. It's the same reason that SMW is questionable (and I'd actually say that SMW2 is more innovative than SMW), it sits in a weird space between truly influential and truly great. Doom was the big transition game from one to the other, but there were more important games before it, and more "perfect" games after it.

While Doom had multiplayer, it was Quake that set the tone for what we see even today in Overwatch.

I just realized that "Inside" is also on this list. Coming from someone who loves indie puzzle / platformers, that one doesn't deserve to be on here either. If IGN wanted that genre represented here somewhere, I'd put Braid or even Limbo, Playdead's previous release, in its place.

I actually have no problem with Super Mario World at #1. I play through it every few years and it never gets old to me. I feel like it took everything SMB3 did and perfected it.

Which is why I’d reward SMB3 that before SMW. Yes SMW is one of the greatest games of all time, but 3 was the more revolutionary one.

If we're talking about multiplayer, I'd put Unreal Tournament over Quake.

But that goes back to my initial question. Is this the best games to play today or are we talking about most influential / revolutionary? I love both SMB3 and SMW, but SMW is the pinnacle of the 2D Mario games.

This list should look very different if we're talking about most revolutionary.

Looking over the list, it looks like they were going for an "all of the above" kind of scale. Originality (both technical and gameplay) appears to be balanced with modern notions of ease and enjoyment of play.

With that said, while I have some issues with individual titles and placements, overall, this is one of the better lists attempting to strike that balance that I've ever seen.
