How low have our expectations gotten for a great video game?

Brother, if you’ve had time to play every great game that has been released over the last few years, you have vastly more free time than I do.

"Great"based on our diminished expectations. Havent played a great game since CFB 25 and before that elden ring. Great is a big word

Sounds like your awareness of great games out there is quite limited in my opinion. There is a lot, and I mean a lot if you're willing to explore and branch out.

If anything, I think gamers these days place unrealistic expectations on games

Yall (we) bitch about everything. Every single thing about games these days is placed under a microscope and critiqued relentlessly..

this right here lol. I spend way too much time playing games these days as it is (at my age, I have to sacrifice sleep in order to play because family time takes up much of the day when I'm not working). Even then, I still don't have the time to play everything. My backlog is embarrassing.

Problem is this is subjective. I have a dozen great games that I don't have time to play as I'm finishing other great games.

I feel like gaming peaked in 2014, and we've been on a low, slow decline ever since.

It isn't just publishers shoehorning microtransactions and forcing out buggy messes. A lot of triple A releases just aren't very good from a writing or game design standpoint.

My hypothesis is that (outside of Nintendo) a lot of the talent who made the legendary games we all know and love have either left the industry or have started an indie studio with vastly more limited resources. Some guy that was like a random QA tester in 2014 is now the "chief creative blah blah blah" at x studio and has like 1/10th of the talent.

I could be wrong, but based on my history of having this conversation online, I would wager that you were in your mid to late teens in 2014. Whether games or movies or music, statistically speaking, that’s when the average person believes media peaked.

I won’t argue that there isn’t slop being put out, but there has always been slop put out. As long as there are a handful of good to great games put out every year, I would say it’s no different than it’s ever been.

Depends on your criteria, but even so, I feel like this is a bonkers statement. Search "[Insert year] Video Game Releases" and on the main search page it was just show the top releases. Every year I'm seeing a lot of good stuff, especially when I got to 2018.

- RDR2
- AC Odyssey
- God of War
- Monster Hunter: World
- Marvel's Spider-Man
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- BLOPS 4 (someone can tell me if this is any good or not)
- Far Cry 5 (personal fave FC game)
- Forza Horizon 4
- Subnautica
- Celeste
- Hitman 2
- Sea of Thieves
- Among Us
- Battlefield V

The stuff around the edges, early buggy releases and microstransitions, have gotten worse, for sure, but I played the crap out of the 2018 release schedule. We're still getting really good games, I just hope the industry doesn't devour itself because too many studios start to fall under the corporate umbrella and are run into the ground because people making decisions don't know the first thing about how gaming works.

He said great, not good.

I see 2 games on that list I would call great (RDR2 and God of War) and will stand the test of time as such.

I think the biggest reason we have fewer great games these days is probably it's difficult to have a unique experience. We are like at least 45-50 years into video gaming at this point and it's extremely difficult to not make a game that feels fresh and exciting and like it's own thing anymore. Ballooning dev times and costs have also really hurt experimentation.

sounds like way too lofty expectations

so you're not including Spider-Man or Super Smash Bros. in that?

if you can get 2 or 3 "great" games and then a crap ton of really good games, I think that's ok

Looking at the 2014 list, what exactly on that release calendar makes it "peak gaming" above all the years following?

What a load of nonsense. You are mired in the past. And I am old. There have been tons of amazing games in the last decade. Hell, the year is early and there are already 4 or 5 legitimate contenders for game of the year.

It's hard to pinpoint one specific year or moment because it was a gradual thing, but gaming began suffering when micro transactions became a huge thing and that lines up pretty well with the early 2010's.

And the current generation fells like a barren wasteland because everyone began chasing the live service dragon.

Not to mention countless other games and franchised ruined thanks to being made for the "modern audience"

And yes there are def still good games coming out, it's just hard not to notice and bemoan the general enshiffication of the gaming industry the past 10-15 years specifically.

internet gaming discourse definitely needs less bitching and nerds who love the smell of their own farts.

All I want is an open world RPG in the Game of Thrones universe. It would print money yet no one does it

I think we are still getting the same amount of games and some great ones among those. We just arent getting the deluge of ground breaking, genre defining hits that we used to get year after year during what, for me anyway, was the best time in gaming....late 90's-2010 or so. The push for live service and micro transactions has stifled creativity in the AAA space imo, but I think the tide maybe starting to turn.

I don't know about all that, but I do know that it raised my eyebrows a bit when a lot of developers looked at BG3 and essentially said "don't expect the bar on other AAA games to be that high". I can't remember any other time so many industry pros said that about a game.
