Another thing working against me is that the Metroidvania genre has never been in my area of interest for whatever reason. Even going back to the NES days I was mainly a straightforward platformer and sports fan with the occasional action adventure game or racing game sprinkled in.

Off of memory, the first game with metroidvania concepts that I ever put any significant time into was Jedi Fallen Order.

So yeah...your boy Strokes discovered Souls-likes in 2020 with the release of the PS5 and Demon's Souls and discovered Metroidvanias in 2021 with the PS5 release of Fallen Order, the release of Jedi Survivor, and the upcoming relase of Silk Song

Yeah if you’re familiar with the Jedi series you should have the tools you need to understand the games flow, as they’re much the same even if they’re obviously constructed in different ways.

Souls likes Metroidvanias with platforming (more in Hollow Knights case)

Returning to old areas with new abilities is often a good way to find valuable items and abilities

Brutal, punishing platforming.

Sounds like some of y'all are too young to remember OG Metroid and/or Blaster Master on the NES. Those were the first two games I recall that let you pick up abilities and force you to use those new skills to backtrack into areas you've already covered to gain access into new parts of the zone.

All Metroidvanias, past, present & future will seek to earn the silver medal after Symphony of the Night.

Celeste is in my backlog but I haven't ever gotten around to playing it.

Alundra on the PS1 was probably the hardest action RPG I can recall. The puzzles were practically impossible. Ditto for the platforming requirements.

Celeste is probably the most difficult platformer I have ever played imo.

Its really really great though because it is insanely finely tuned and polished and any mistakes or failures dont feel cheap or like the game was designed poorly. It is all on you

Nah…not too young. Turned 40 this year. I clearly stated I simply played different games for most of my life until about 5 years ago

Hollow Knight doesn't make an unbelievable first impression or anything. I remember thinking this is it? It's a really solid and well made game but there has to be more to it than this.

And there is. It's now one of my favorite games of all time. The world, the bosses, the story, the enemies, everything about it is so well constructed. I don't remember when I started appreciating it, but I know the bosses and the amount of content in the game had a lot to do with it.

Guess I'm going to pick up this game....

Again.

I love the idea, and I really enjoy the first couple of hours, then it just doesn't keep hold.

I was kind of in the same boat when I finally got around to playing it which was way way after it released and the hype cycle had hit peak.

I didn’t understand the GOAT praise, while I thought it was quality still. Then once you start to get more abilities and the platforming really really opens up and the boss difficulty starts cranking up it does reach those highs imo.

Like I told strokes though it can be a very disorienting game at the beginning

Yeah I was also thinking when I first started playing on how this could be one of the greatest games of all time even though I did enjoy it. The game clicked with me at the City of Tears. Yes, you are very limited at the beginning, but it’s for the best given how tight the controls are. Once you unlock the big abilities, that’s when you start to understand the vision.

I got to say, that’s an absolute steal. They could easily charge $30+ and people would buy it. Yeah, these guys like to take their time, but they’re not greedy. Silksong’s world btw is supposed to be at least twice the size of Hallownest.

Please god no. Hallownest was way too big to begin with. Highly doubtful thats true too. Enemy and boss counts are comparable to the first game

What they’ve said is there are 40 benches in Hollow Knight and around 100 in Silksong.

That quote was from 4 years ago and Ari just said "I designed like 100 benches" so I wouldn't put too much stock into it. They also said they were "finishing up" 3 years ago

I'd imagine it's VERY similar in scale/scope to HK
