If a SteamBox comes out and offers the same ease that Steam provides while having matching the other manufacturers on peripherals, retail support, etc.

If all that happens, I can't see how it would do poorly. It would be a perfect combination of a great service with the utility and ease that people like with consoles. While Steam is still primarily focused in the West, I'm sure Valve could get some Japanese support with a new console.

It's coming. Gabe hates MS and is pushing the shite out of Linux. A Steam Box would be another way for Gabe to hurt MS a little more. They had someone working on one earlier this year but scrapped that when details leaked. I am willing to bet the leak is what got them shite canned as Steam is pretty secretive. I have little doubt they are working on one right now with various manufacturers to come up with something and it will be sooner than later.

That's also why you now see Steam offering a service to browse Steam on your TV and lump all of the games that allow controllers into one section.

Also, with the yen weaker, they're able to make so much more off of everything they sell in the US and Europe.

We shall see. I know Valve can do it, but I don't know how lucrative a market it would be for them. It's already crowded with the big 3 + Ouya.

Are you saying it was weaker in 2011 because if you are saying it was weaker in 2012 then that means their 94% shrink would actually be a bigger loss in comparison.

I just hope the consoles will allow custom button configuration on controllers. Highly unlikely. But it's something I like about PC games.

Does that really require a high end machine?

They could do it. They have just chosen not to until now.

Valve has a lot of cash. No marketing costs, no hardware production, and make a ton of their popular games in house. Of course the first two would change with a Steam Box but point is they have the cash to try.

Ouya doesn't bother them and to those that are into the Ouya I think the indy games and mods that you could play on a Steam box will be a big driving factor. This is also true for going against Xbox and PS. Steam is more open than it is proprietary which Live and PSN can't say.

They really wouldn't be competing with the Wii at all IMO.

It would be really down to them, Sony, and MS since they all offer pretty much the same games. Unless Sony and MS can come up with a distribution platform as good as Steam with the same aggressive pricing it offers then Steam would be OK.

My biggest question is, will we see more "xbox exclusives" cross over onto PC next gen than we did this gen?

I'm thinking... yes, I have a feeling we might even see Halo 5 on PC, why not? It would bring M$ more money after all if they do it. I also think it'll be much easier to bring a game from the one over to a PC this time around as well.

The did try that with Halo 1, but I'm not sure that it worked out so well money wise.

I also really think the game just doesn't translate as well to mouse/keyboard on PC.

I don't think so simply because MS wants you to buy their console and then use it to get on Live. In the long run that makes them more money than just selling Halo to the PC market.

The more you are on Live and using the Xbox One for everything the more likely you are to spend money.

Halo is their most popular exclusive right now. Giving it to PC gamers would kill off some potential console sales.

Thanks for the link. Looks badass. Guess I better hold off on buying a new graphics card.

Definitely agree with this. Halo moved consoles.

They get nothing but the actual game profits when selling it on PC.

No, when the economy crapped itself in 2008/09, the dollar and the euro took a big hit and the yen got stronger. This meant that Sony and Nintendo were making less and less on every exported product.

In the past year, the yen has gotten a lot weaker and made the exchange rate better. It was 74 yen -> $1 just a few years ago to now where it's 101 yen -> $1)

So some of their profits are due to the exchange rates leveling out as you said.

In other words an already bad 2012 could have been a lot worse if it hadn't come down.
