In other words an already bad 2012 could have been a lot worse if it hadn't come down.

But none of the previous years would have been as bad if not for the bad exchange rate. Before the economy fell, the exchange rate was often 120-130 yen ->$1. That's a ~ 30% cut in revenue just because of exchange rates!

I mean we can blame it on that all we want and a million analogies could be spewed like going by what you just posted that means they would have made even more money in 2011 and the 2012 drop would have been bigger than it really is.

You are also forgetting that the American dollar during that same time period has weakened in comparison to the Euro. In fact, the Euro has risen something like 70% against the dollar since 2000. That's the second largest market for Xbox.

It works both ways is all.

LULZ

It's pretty crazy when the GB tries to bring in world economics to make excuses for poor performance and profits.

I'm not trying to excuse anything. Just trying to provide more information and perspective.

I'm saying that Sony's profit was largely in part of the nicer exchange rate. It hurt all Japanese companies a ton. Here's a nifty article from 2011 if you want to read some more. LINK

I know what you are getting at but like I said every company faces this on some level.

You don't think a weak dollar has hurt MS during that same period?

Again, we can use it as an excuse and make a million "what could have been" analogies. None of that changes anything though.

As long as the exchange rates are impacting the companies the same it's apples to apples. Now if somehow they have bought currency futures or hedged their bets somehow, it's a different ballgame. I know Microsoft hasn't done this.

We're simply speaking from a manufacturing and the production cost standpoint.

I guess Xbox might try to appeal to the hardcore gamers too.
