I have never played a sports game for more hours than I did Tecmo Super Bowl 3 when I was in elementary and middle school. What a great game.

RBI Baseball (NES)

used to play 7-game series with my dad back in the early 90s. I was 6/7 yrs old and he was in his early 30s. Great memories.

He would pick teams with the side-arm pitchers (Saberhagen, Bedrosian, Orosco, Kerfeld...not sure if there were others) because I couldn't hit them to save my life. I always loved using Boston or St Louis as my teams. I would clap cheeks with Jim Rice, Don Baylor, etc.

2k5 was a damn good game

And it launched at $20 brand new. Then EA had to ruin everything a few months later.

NCAA 06 holds a special place in my heart. I was really into college football as a middle schooler, had just upgraded my GameCube to a PS2, and got my mom to drive me to the store at midnight in the middle of summer on release day.

And it freaking delivered

I dont watch hockey and never really have but i lived up north in my grade school days and enjoyed playing hockey on the lakes when they froze up and stuff. I guess that led to me LOVING this N64 game. Played this shite for hours on end.

Super Baseball Simulator 1.000

I played this quite a bit when I was younger, it was a lot of fun. I remember things like playing on the moon, drilling line drives through infielders all the way to the wall and getting doubles from bunts

ETA: Apparently it was the NES Baseball Simulator 1.000 game where you could play on the moon.

I don't remember NCAA '06 except for the soundtrack, why was it considered the GOAT?

I vote for Mutant League Football on Sega. Loved that game

It's a perfect balance between football sim and recruiting sim (the two things a game like this NEEDS to get correct). You can put equal weight to both, or do one and not the other, and the payoff feels earned in either case.

It's also a perfect balance of complex vs arcade-style simplicity. You can get as involved in these things as you want, or smash the controller with good results. Or just auto-sim them completely.

No prior entry in this series managed the gameplay balance as perfectly, and every entry after this one overcomplicated those core gameplay mechanics. '06 just nails both of these things.

It also features one of my favorite bugs in any of video game--a withdrawn offer counts as a pitch. You can recruit like fricking mad with this trick. I loved pulling 15-20 5*s every year.

The soundtrack, of course, is excellent too.

Tecmo Super Bowl and NHL 94 are probably the gold standards in sports games.

RBI 3 was probably my favorite baseball game.

Madden 02 had the expansion draft that let you either select the Texans or create a whole new franchise, so that will always be my favorite edition.

NCAA went on a run from like 06-10 that was amazing.
