I haven't played video games in over 10 yrs. I used to play(and enjoy) the early Doom games and Duke Nukem. I loved the "shoot 'em up" games. I bought the first Doom that could be played on-line. I could not begin to compete. I wasn't having fun.I would like to get back into some gaming but don't know what to play. I find many games seem too complex to figure out just how to play at all. Super NES baseball was great . Sony Play Station Baseball -too complex: moving runners, pitching, batting. Spent all my time trying to fugure out how to play and not playing. Does anyone have advice on what to stat back up with.? Thanks. I'm interested in 1 player games and not on-line competition gaming.

That’s a pretty staggering level of simplicity you’re looking for...

Most fps games are fairly simple. There's a new Doom that came out a few years ago or you can go for one of the COD or Battlefield games.

If you’re dead set on finding something modern to play, start back with the reboot of DOOM that was released in 2016. It intentionally tries to hearken back to the original game’s frenetic action and is pretty damn successful in doing so. Just be aware: you are going to suck arse when you first start. Be patient, stick with it, try not to let it frustrate you too much, and you’ll eventually figure it out.

You can also go for games that are intended to have a retro feel like Axiom Verge, Dead Cells, and many, many more. It shouldn’t be too tough to find one that appeals to you.

Alternatively, if you just miss old-school games and find nothing scratches your itch quite like they do, you could invest in a RetroPie system. For less than $150 you can have every NES, SNES, Genesis, PlayStation, etc. game ever made.

Why do people want everything to be easy?

If you suck at it, keep trying and keep playing, you’ll come around eventually

I think people who play a lot of video games have lost sight of how daunting the hobby can be for someone starting from scratch (or close to it as OP seems to be). If you hand someone a modern controller it will have around 14 buttons, 1 d-pad, and 2 analog sticks. That can be pretty intimidating even before you introduce navigating a 3d space, properly controlling a camera in 3rd person, or even the actual mechanics of the game itself.

To OP's question, I'd recommend checking out a Nintendo Switch and pick up some games like Super Mario Odyssey, Luigi's Mansion 3, and Link's Awakening. Nintendo does a good job of making their games approachable by introducing the controls slowly and ramping up the complexity gradually.

Then you can move on to Breath of the Wild and even Doom 2016 if you like. There are also plenty of 2d side-scrolling games on the platform if you'd rather get your feet wet there first.

However, if you're comfortable with modern controllers and just want to dive right in with a modern first person shooter, I'd go with a PS4 and check out Doom 2016 on that system, along with Titanfall 2. If you are interested in something with more focus on story played from a 3rd person perspective, pick up God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn.

That’s the easy part. The trick is learning to aim at the same time.

Some people just aren't good at games but really want the story. That is why so many games have different difficulty levels.

I don't mind a challenge but I hate games that are hard just for the sake of being hard or just to make the game feel like it is longer than it is.
