ive always just used whatever tv I had in the past, but now im interested in a gaming monitor.
I mostly play first person shooters on xbox series x.
but i also have a mining rig I may steal a 6700xt or a 3070ti from to build a PC and may get into some pc gaming as well.

probably wanting to keep under $500. any specific recs or brands or features to look for?

How serious are you about being competitive with fps versus things looking pretty?

i dont need it for being super competitive. doesnt the series x cap out at 120 hz? i want to max out what I can get from a series x with some extra wiggle if I decide to game possibly with a future pc build.

im hoping to keep it well under 500. just kind of a first thought wouldn't spend more than 500.
just wondering what some of the tried/true brands or models may be.

How far away are you planning to sit from it, at least for the time you’re using it for console?

thats a little tbd. im moving to a new place and gotta figure out my setup. sitting closer is an easy option and is not a problem as i can move a chair or something easily. i planned to be sitting closer than a TV across the room.

I don't really have a recommendation for a sub 500 monitor. But if you are in the market for a new TV I highly recommend a Samsung q90. They are a true 120fps with g sync and among the best picture quality and HDR in the business. I have a Samsung q90 85" in my living room that I have my 10700k/3080ti gaming rig hooked up to and it's the best gaming experience I've ever had bar none. I also have a wireless mouse, keyboard, controller and headset to pair with it at couch distances.

Same answer I give to this every time, LG 27GL83A-B. 1440p/144hz 1ms IPS. I have one and it’s fantastic at that price point.

299.99 at Amazon right now

I'll second this recommendation. Grabbed one last week for under 300 and couldn't be happier.

I asked this question a while back and got good answers. I found that its a mix of complicated specs and personal preference. I went with the Monoprice Dark Matter 32in QHD IPS Gaming Display, 2560x1440p, QHD, 165Hz, 1ms.

LINK

Its on sale right now for $249.99. It looks fantastic, IMO, but I'm not sure about all of the real response rates (that 1ms isn't real) and refresh rates. I play PC games and my PS5 on it, even though only certain PS5 games have 120Hz. Some on here may have issues with this one but I like it so far. My rationale behind this one, if I hate it and want to replace in a couple of years, it wasn't super expensive.

Best Buy Dell 27"

Had this for about 3 months and love it. Listed for $449 but got it on sale for $300. 27" 165 Hz 1440p. I'm on Xbox series X so I can get the 120 fps on certain games, but plan on going to PC in the next year, so it should transfer over just fine.

If you are in the market, this is a pretty good deal, IMO.

GIGABYTE G27Q 27" 144Hz 1440P Gaming Monitor, 2560 x 1440 IPS Display, 1ms (MPRT) Response Time, 92% DCI-P3, VESA Display HDR400, FreeSync Premium

$239.99 at Newegg right now.

$500 is a pretty high budget for a monitor.
Competitive gaming- 1920x1080 240 hz monitor
Single player (or games that don’t benefit from high frame rates)- 4K 100-120hz monitor. 60hz is fine but you’d be doing yourself a huge disservice with that type of budget.

Middle ground- 1440p 100-144hz monitor

Don’t bother with anything smaller than 27”

I’d recommend 1440p but can’t recommend specific brands/models because I don’t look at or research monitors often. I’ll be upgrading to a 1440p monitor soon. Can’t wait
