I know for sure I've brought them back after opening it but I just got the same game back in return. I even did that at target about 6 years ago.

Yep. Once it’s opened, it’s in your possession.

I was able to swap out a game five-ish years ago because it didn’t work. There weren’t any scratches on the disc. It just didn’t work when I popped it into the PS3. The guy was nice enough to swap it but only after I explained.

ETA: also it’s possible that they could only swap discs but not allow you a refund/cash back or get a diff game.

I wish this battle royale thing with go away but I don't think it's going to die anytime soon.

Why would you want that? What game does it interfere with?

I don't particularly like open world story mode games but I don't want them to go away.

Yes I thought about this one as well. I know DOTA and League were all the rage. There were probably a bunch o of smaller ones too. Even though it was mostly 2 games dominating the market, it was a big enough thing to definitely qualify as a fad, it sucked up all the air out of competitive gaming for a long time. I mean hell it's till going strong but Battle Royale has sorta dethroned it for the moment.

I think people have a natural selfish desire to see the things they personally like featured more prominently.

It's frustrating to see genres I don't enjoy sucking up a lot of the oxygen in the gaming world. It's a completely selfish antipathy I fully admit.

MOBAs were definitely a fad. I’d say they’re dying out now compared to a few years ago before the BR games started

At one time, all these MOBAs were going on:
DOTA
LOL
HOTS
Smite
Paragon
Battleborn
Paladins
Overwatch
Gigantic

Most are terrible, but it’s definitely a fad that has mostly ended

The motion control fad was almost exclusively Wii. Kinect and PS Move never really caught on. The only Kinect games I remember were either dancing or aeorbics, not even really games.

I think you're a bit off in your estimate of motion impact on end of life cycle for Kinect and PS Move.

Kinect was the sole reason for Xbox 360's long tail at the end of its life. It sold over 35m on a ~80m userbase (24m was done before X1 launched). That's incredible for a super expensive camera.

PS Move was not as successful as Wiimote or Kinect, but it did sell over 15m as of November 2012, which honestly far more than I expected. With its use in VR, that number is likely much higher now.

Extreme Sports games in the early 2000s. There were so many terrible ones. shite, even Kelly Slater had a fricking terrible surfing game after the success of Tony Hawk's 45658779465498 games.

There seems to be one of two primary drivers behind all almost these fads.

A. Technology improvement comes along that enables a type of genre that previously couldn't be done (or done well)

B. A game hits it really, really big and that spurs an avalanche of copy cats, good and bad, into that genre.
