There have been a lot and sometimes they overlap, what are some you can think of? Some have longer staying power than others. Obviously all these genres still exist but there's no denying they were the super "hot" genre at the time and most are now niche.

Here are a few I can think of:

Early 90 to mid 90's: Fighting games (Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, Clay Fighter, a bunch of others, etc.)

Late 90's, early 2000's: 3D Platformers (Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Jax and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Spyro, etc.)

Late 90's: RTS (Warcraft II, StarCraft, Command and Conquer, Age of Empires, etc)

Late 2000's: Motion controls (all things Wii, PS Move, Kinnect etc.)

Also Late 2000's: Music/Rhythm games (Guitar Hero, Rock Band, DJ Hero, etc.)

Past few years - Present: Battle Royale
Past few years - Present: "Open World" games

Gotta bring back the true RTS games, none of the unit cap BS that starcraft started.

RTS games were almost exclusively PC. I can't think of any console games. Maybe FF Tactics if that counts.

The motion control fad was almost exclusively Wii. Kinect and PS Move never really caught on. The only Kinect games I remember were either dancing or aeorbics, not even really games.

I would add survival horror as well into late 90s.

Creation of video games - 2010: Developers making and releasing complete games

2010 - present day: Developers and publishers releasing games that are about 60% completed

Yep good call.

Resident Evil games, Silent Hill games, Dino Crisis, Parasite Eve, there def. was a noticeably surge in the genre around that time.

I think their existence, even if mostly failed, speaks to the fad being strong.

Maybe gun games and driving games at the arcades up until the early 90s. By driving games I mean games where you sit down like Pole Position or Ridge Racer. There were spin offs like that helicopter game and that motorcycle game. I can never remember what those were called.

Gun games made it consoles but kind of died off after the SNES/Genesis generation. You still have places like Dave and Buster's keeping driving and gun games alive now.

Late 80's to early 90's: Side-scrolling Platformers / Action games (Super Mario Brothers, Mega Man, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, Sonic the Hedgehog and on and on...)

Early 90's (overlapping with fighting games): Side-scrolling beat-em-ups (TMNT Arcade / Turtles in Time, Final Fight, Streets of Rage, The Simpsons, etc.)

Early to mid 90's: Doom clones (Dark Forces, Heretic, Hexen, Duke Nukem 3d, etc.)

2010's to now: Demon's / Dark Souls clones (Lords of the Fallen, Salt and Sanctuary, Nioh, The Surge, etc.)

They were certainly trying their damndest to make it one a year or two ago. The VR hype seemed to come and go pretty quickly though. I know there is a small community that absolutely loves but it wasn't widely adopted enough to become a mainstream thing. 91.6 million PS4's have been sold vs. 3 million PS4 VR headsets.

I can see VR being a legit big genre fad in the near future when the tech is more widely available, maybe the next gen console swill come with a headset by default, that would certainly help.

I hope not unless it's REALLY REALLY ready. That's like the xbone coming with the kinect which I instantly sold for $100 like 2 weeks after having it.

I don't think so for where I lived. But maybe I am remembering wrong and I could return it for a new copy of the game. Then you could flip that one.
