Originally announced by Koei in 2004 (before their merger with Tecmo made them Koei Tecmo), the game is based on an unfinished script by filmmaker Akira Kurosawa titled Oni (Japanese word for demon). The game was to be released with a companion film, also titled Oni, that would have seen the directoral debut of Hisao Kurosawa, Akira Kurosawa's son. Hisao Kurosawa was completing his father's script with assistance from game producer Kou Shibusawa of Koei, with a combined production budget of ¥ 3 billion for both film and game.[3] "When reading Hisao Kurosawa's script", Shibusawa said during a press conference, "it gave me the impression of stories like Seven Samurai and The Hidden Fortress".

Saying it is souls inspired would be an understatement

Yeah that would be awesome. The closest I have played to a Star Wars Souls-like game was some SW game on the PC, the name I cannot remember, that played kind of similar to how a Dynasty Warriors game would play. Was very fun, although this was like mid-late 2000s when I last played this. Been trying to find the name of this game for years now, and I can't fricking remember

I'm pretty excited for Ni-Oh! too. It looks to be pretty promising and I like that it's not just a clone of Souls combat. It's a low slower and more methodical. Like one of the Genji titles or Onimusha as you mentioned.

Here's another trailer: LINK

This trailer looks much further along than the TGS walkthrough.

That's what I gather from the gameplay. Lot less movement than you'd expect from the team that made Ninja Gaiden.

This looks very similar to how the game was. My memories of the game are spotty, but yeah I'm almost 95% positive this is the game. Thanks Scruffy

This is more what I'm referring to as fast paced. LINK

It's not a combo driven action game like Devil May Cry, but it's about a lot fast attacking and evasion.

I thought you were saying slower than Souls
I'm back in. I actually don't like hack n slash type games.

Re-reading what I posted, I can see where you thought that. It's definitely not a fast paced game, but neither is Dark Souls.

Jombie is going to go apeshit over this

Team Ninja has my trust. NG1 and 2 are two of my favorites

demo has been released. supposedly 6 hours and has a few bosses. downloading tonight

some impressions from reddit:

quote:

It's Onimusha, meets Tenchu, meets Dark Souls! Cannot put this damn Alpha down. Started out, couldn't even kill the first enemy, then I started popping them left and right, expertly blocking and now I am summoning the dead spirits of other players to defeat at all levels. Absolutely fantastic, day one purchase for me for sure!

quote:

If you haven't played the PS4 Nioh demo yet, for the love of God go and play it.

The demo for Nioh was released today and it's definitely a must-buy for me after playing it. I wouldn't say it's quite the "Dark Souls meets Onimusha" game that fans theorised it would be -- because there's a lot more of a Souls influence in there than Onimusha -- but it's an amazing demo. It took me around six hours to complete and I was never bored once. It looks fantastic and feels so satisfying to play. It can only be played until May 5th or something like that so I'd play it while you can, especially if you're a Souls fan.

quote:

Kou Shibusawa has called this relatively new genre 'Dying Games' and it's pretty clear in Nioh why. Nioh is incredibly strict in the damage your character takes; a single hit is enough to kill your character from the most basic footsoldier. Stamina management is also key, because when you attempt an action without any left, your character gets stunned for half a second. As in, you literally can't do anything. If you try to dodge with no stamina left, you're about to eat whatever attack you were trying to dodge from. Enemies, rather fairly, play by the same rules you do and have their own visible stamina gauge. They will also be stunned when they deplete it, giving you an opportunity to strike. The game rewards being aggressive, however, and wailing on enemies before they know what hit them tends to work extremely well. The block button seems to be entirely superfluous, and running around and striking quickly seems to be most effective. Leveling up is performed at shrines, which are glowing little wooden structures inhabited by small, thong-wearing green shrine spirits. They act like the bonfires in the Souls games. This is also where you summon coop partners. You can offer a ceramic cup, called an Ochoko, to a shrine and it will search for 'Visitors' to play in your world. You can leave this on while progressing through the world yourself, and they remain there when you die, so it feels like there's much less downtime to finding coop partners than in the Souls games. As for other online aspects, you can summon 'Revenants', which appear to be the souls of other players slain by the world's enemies. Signified by a red katana stuck into the ground, summoning a Revenant gives you an intensely hard NPC enemy to fight. There is also a stance system. By holding the R1 button and pressing one of the face buttons, you can change your characters stance to... I don't know. The Triangle stance is slower, I know that much, but I'm not sure what benefits or drawbacks each stance offers. You can also set the game to run in either 'Movie Mode', which runs at 30FPS and 1080p, or to 'Action Mode', which guts the resolution to attain 60FPS. Movie Mode runs pretty badly at the moment, so I recommend that you switch to Action Mode if you're not antsy about resolution. Overall it seems to be a worthy game from Team Ninja that's long overdue. I'd definitely recommend trying it if you like the Souls games. Some have drawn comparisons to Onimusha, but not much of that series' DNA lies in Nioh; it's very much inspired by the Souls games more than anything.

quote:

Holy hell, I'm about 15 minutes in and I'm already in love. It hurts so good! Maybe even more punishing of mistakes than Dark Souls because, like you said, you can often recover from a single mistake in the Souls games but in this one I feel like one mistake at an inopportune time and you're done for. I just beat an incredibly hard "revenant" with a huge axe, I really like that you can summon these guys to fight. And holy hell, the customization!! There's so much ability to fight how you want! Weapon type between axe, sword, or spear, from there you can choose stance, and for each stance it looks like you can customize how you want combos to play out (e.g. putting the move "Morning Moon" for when you end a combo with triangle in mid stance). Also, apparently mid stance is the best for guarding? Anyways, thanks for your in depth write up, I'm in North America so it was nice reading this while I waited, and I was wondering what the heck the cups for summoning visitors was all about, didn't realize that was the co-op; I'm certainly gonna try that out in a bit. I can already tell this will be a preorder and day one purchase for me!
