I've talked about it a few times on here, but when Elden Ring came out, I found myself... aggravated? by the people asserting that it was the best game ever made. My kneejerk was that it almost certainly wasn't, that it was just over exuberance from "git gud" enthusiasts who made up a minority, albeit a very loud minority, of the internet.

But, the whole discussion was a thorn in my side, because in spite of all my years gaming, I'd never played a single Souls-like. Not one. The "hard for the sake of hard" vibe that I always got from conversations surrounding them always kept me away. My gaming backlog was far too big to play something I was fairly certain I wouldn't like. I was sure the glow would fade over time.

Then a year later, some people were still saying that Elden Ring was the best game ever created. Now, there was also a rising chorus against it, and as much as the nays felt persuasive, that thorn still wouldn't go away, because in the back of my mind, I knew that reeked of confirmation bias. There was a legitimate argument regarding the best god damned game of all time, and I was wholly, utterly ignorant on the subject matter being discussed.

So I decided to not only play Elden Ring, but to give it a truly fair shake by playing every Dark Souls game that came before it. All of them, even though I knew I would hate them. So I started with Dark Souls (Remastered). I found it to be odd, dense, and arcane. And difficult. Painfully fricking difficult. But I also found it interesting. I won't go into detail here, as I already did so in the Weekend Gaming thread, but I beat it, all bosses no cheese. I wouldn't say that I loved it, but I enjoyed the experience. Then I beat Dark Souls 2. Then Dark Souls 3. Now I had this weird itch. I kept wanting to go back to Dark Souls. So I rolled another build. Then another. And then another. Then I started doing (minor) challenge runs. Then speed runs. Then SL1 runs. Dark Souls became my meditation game, my relaxation game. frick knows it's not perfect, but it scratches an itch I simply haven't been able to scratch with any other game. Beyond that, Dark Souls had fundamentally altered how my brain processes challenges, obstacles, and failures. Not just in gaming: in every facet of my life.

Now, here we are, two years after release. The base game of Elden Ring is as polished as it's ever going to be. So when I got the email saying it was discounted in the current Steam sale, I pulled the trigger. Started my playthrough last night. Unlike with the mainline Souls games, I'm going in blind(ish): I'll look up things that I don't understand, tips on mechanics that don't feel right to my muscle memory (hi, parry windows that are vastly earlier than those from any of the Dark Souls games...), but I'm not reading, much less following, any walkthroughs or set paths. Though as I get further along, I'll likely start shifting away from that so I can catch things I missed. But for now, just walking the path.

I won't really be looking for tips or advice on here, as not only are there long threads already, there are two years of reddit threads long enough to choke an AI large language model if I need. But if anyone wants to keep me company as I play through, by all means. And I would certainly invite any discussion as I just kind of jot down my thoughts on comparisons to previous Souls games, my thoughts on it being the greatest game ever, or anything else that crosses my mind.

It's been a hell of a ride, and it feels a bit surreal to be firing up this final chapter. But now, with all of that said, back to the Lands Between.

I keep trying Souls games. . .hell I own all of them.

But they just don't appeal to me. The story on most of them is non-existent (told through collectibles at best), the graphics are generally sub par, and the entire allure is how annoying the bosses are.

I keep getting convinced to try them, and I just can never get into it

I understand Elden Ring has a narrative and a clear story, and great graphics. . .but still the third thing still gets me. having to fight a guy 100 times to learn moves to turn the encounter into essentially a quicktime event. . .and that is supposed to feel like accomplishment.

I get that the Souls series, and genre, has a ravenous "swifties"esque fanbase. . .and I don't hate on people for enjoying anything. It is like country music. I see the allure. I have tried to like it, repeatedly. I just can't vibe with it.

Great post, although I’m not sure I agree with the “they are hard for the sake of being hard” narrative. I think that the difficulty encourages the development of strategies and optimizing builds (meaning you learn what is great and not so great about the various spells, weapons, skills, etc). Games that are easier allow me to advance with brute force to where I often collect a bunch of shite that I don’t need. In these games I find that I have to experiment with most everything in order to advance in my initial playthroughs

As a point of clarification, that's not my current position:

That's the vibe I got from conversations before I played, not my position afterwards.

My story isn’t too far off from yours. The difference is that I didn’t know or had never heard of the FromSoft games before. I was always a sports/fighting/nintendo/grand theft auto gamer.

A buddy of mine told me to try Bloodborne a few years ago and never made past the wolf in the opening area lol. Granted I only have it a try for 30-45 minutes.

Once I finally snagged a PS5 he convinced me to try the Demons Souls remake. It took me a long time to get a grasp on the mechanics but once I did I hit the ground running. Next was Elden Ring and then I ran through all the Dark Souls. I still haven’t beaten Bloodborne yet. Made it pretty far but then lost steam and moved on.

I don’t do challenge runs but am trying to fulfill a goal of platinuming every game. I’ve done it with ER, DeS, and DkS1.

This is me. Tried most of them and they just do nothing for me.

Elden Ring is obviously a masterpiece but it's not even in my top 3 FromSoftware games to be honest.

That's not a knock against Elden Ring, it's far more a praise to them about to how awesome their games have been the past 15 years.

You're comparing 10's to other 10's here, so it's a matter of preference really.

I thought about playing this one but I’ve tried games like bloodborne and the surge and found them annoyingly hard in the beginning where you can’t even get into the game so I haven’t played the souls games.

That was my problem. I do not have the time to figure games like that out anymore. I love a challenge but life has changed for me

Elden Ring is the most user friendly FromSoft game.

the difficulty curve is kinda whatever you want it to be with the open world setup. I would say its worth at least trying and clearing the first camp and enjoying the scenery.

Elden Ring and Death Stranding are 2 of the only games that have stuck with me since RDR2

This is probably an unpopular opinion but Elden Ring is my least favorite FromSoft game. A lot of the Legacy and Minor Dungeons were cool, but I just don't think open world works with the Souls formula.

It’s definitely the easiest, but I wouldn’t put it below DS2.

I wanted to spend some time with the game before I made any complaints, but thus far, I agree. The issue is that you have no real way of knowing whether you’re under leveled or just need to git gud. I followed the graces to the Margit fight, only to get absolutely wrecked. So dug in, worked on the git gud, and was pretty consistently getting him to his second phase, but I kept getting caught by his summoned weapon flurries and I just couldn’t keep up. So I started googling to see if I was missing something, only to read that Margit is tuned for a level 25+ player character with a weapon that has been upgraded multiple times. I was level 13 with zero weapon upgrades. So I looked up the upgrade system, ran around grabbing some stones (naming them 1, 2, 3 might have seemed intuitive, but damn does my brain struggle with the level versus the number I just picked up), came back around level… 16ish? With a +3 or so Claymore and a few flask upgrades under my belt.

Absolutely embarrassed him with parries. Just fricking wrecked him, first try.

Now, was putting Margit there likely intended to be a brick wall that sent me out into the world to level up? Sure. Is that at all intuitive within the context of the game, and especially a FromSoft game? No, no it fricking isn’t

With that said, I am actually enjoying the game. But there are definitely little bitching points that are irking me.

i too was not a fan of their other games of the "soul" genre. I had tried darksouls 2, bounced right off immediately. Bloodborne was getting rave reviews, i played a few bosses in and said "no thanks".

so when i started Elden ring, i was pretty skeptical. I am glad i did. i t was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and a great game. i cant recall now what other games came out that year, but it was definitely the goty material and i se why it was for so many.

greatest game of all time? No, not by a long shot. Great game period? You bet your arse.

I am so, so sorry that DS2 was your first foray into the Souls series

I like to equate Margit to that first Black Knight you encounter in DS1. It’s easily apparent whether you are meant to try and fight them or not

That first black knight is down a staircase, down a hallway, with his back to you, guarding a shiny. Very, very different from Margit, who the game not only tells you (albeit not by name) to go to but weaves a golden thread through the air pointing directly to him.
