Final Fantasy VIII is the worst Playstation Final Fantasy

It's still a better game than 13 or 15, but the game's an absolute mess.
The junction system isn't what I would call complicated, but it's so easily abused that the game itself has practically no difficulty curve whatsoever. I'm not even sure what the "right" way to play would be. If you're not junctioning 100 magic on each stat, you're just artificially inflating the difficulty.
The card system just breaks the game. All you need are a few rare cards then it becomes almost impossible to loose at the card game. You refine all the extra cards you win for insanely good items/magic.
The plot is just awful. You're a member of an elite group of teenage mercenaries who meets up with a bunch of strangers and is tasked to assassinate an evil sorceress, and you all eventually "remember" that you grew up in the same orphanage together and the "big bad" was your nanny. You defeat your nanny only to realize there's another sorceress from the future who wants to compress time because reasons.
I don't even know what "compress time" means. So far as I can tell, it just means I can't visit towns on the world map.
There's some word salad explanation for how to defeat the sorceress. You do all the things and then are treated to a psychedelic fever dream of an ending.
Unlike 7 and 9, none of the party members have any development whatsoever. There's just a really awkward romance between Squall and Rhinoa. Squall is the typical late 90s emo introvert and acts like he doesn't give a shite about Rhinoa (who is an insufferable character) until he does then he's borderline obsessed with her.
The final boss of this game is an example of everything bad about JRPGs of that era. You have 4 phases of BS mechanics starting with the first phase placing you in an entirely random party where you just let your neglected party members die so that your main team slowly spawn in. Then, you're at the mercy of RNG gods to just pray that the boss doesn't completely wipe away any magic junctioned to your best stat and/or healing abilities.
Finally, the boss has a move that wipes the entire party's HP down to 1 and she loves spamming it. Hope you have elixers/megalixers and know how to abuse the limit break system.
Then, as if that's not enough. Even after exhausting all of her HP, she still hits you with her strongest attacks while she monologues before finally dieing.

Junction system was always one of my favorite progression systems in a Final fantasy game. Loved playing around with it, finding the right combination of magic types to place on various stats, and having some beastly fighters early on.
Getting the GF abilities to turn items into magic made the tedium of draining magic obsolete which was nice. And not too far into the game you can get some really good magic to beef up your stats a lot (Curaga to HP, Tornado to attack).
I understand why you might think it “broke the game” but I liked this alternative to having to level grind like most RPGs.

I've noticed the only ones who "enjoy it" are the ones who enjoying finding all the ways to make themselves OP. If you just want to play and progress naturally it makes no sense.

It’s a very broken game, spells are pointless in battle. Except for meltdown and aura. Which is cheese. It’s not really a shame to be a worse game than 7 and 9 though.

Loved it because you could put in the work and abuse it or you...could not..and just play.

The best mini game. End of story.

It wasn't awful...it just wasn't great.

The only character with life in 9 was vivi..which is funny considering he story/orgin.
The only characters in 8 I cared about (Laguna,Squall,Rinoa)gave me all the development i wanted.

Im actually glad it was a bit challenging until you know how to break it. Final Fantasy Final bosses as of recent have been super easy fights.

Or the moves allows you to take advantage of the LB system if you want to play risky.
It is not the best FF...but it certainly isn't the worse.

It's the worst PSX one, by far

I wouldn't argue that. In fact I agree with it. Id just prefer 8 over 9.

All of what you said may be true, but it will always be my favorite FF. It was the first one I played and beat as a kid and the story line blew 10 year old me away. I pretty much spammed GFs my whole way through lol and beat the final boss by synthesizing lagunas card and getting 100 of the items that make you invisible for about 3 rounds at a time so you can’t be hit (forget the name). I probably wouldn’t have beat it if not for that. I remember fighting it forever
I refused to play the remake because I knew if I played at my age now I, like you, would probably be made more aware of all it’s flaws and it would ruin it for me. I’d like to keep my memory and nostalgia of it as it lol

But she's essentially a non-character after Squall graduates SeeD training. Her and Selphie compete for the role of most useless character.

Pretty easy to put Zell and Irvine into that as well. None of those 4 really have much going on.

Funny.. I think VII is overrated while VIII is criminally underrated.

VII is overrated. I remember VIII getting a lot of attention when it was released, so I wouldn't call it underrated. IX is the one Final Fantasy game that really doesn't get that much press.
