ETA: For hard mode I would definitely move around your elemental materia from your weapon and armor depending on the situation. You can get a second if you do 24 of the 26 total side quests. Chapter 9 has 4 but with the decisions you make you can do 2 and you get locked out of the other 2. Also do the hard simulation battles in chapter 17 for the accessory you get at the end.

Started some hard mode and I get it now. Didn't realize no items...so you really have to ration MP so using Elemental materia is a much bigger deal.

It's funny, the normal enemies in Ch.1 are getting absolutely destroyed by Triple Slash with Hardedge, I was thinking "this is hard mode? Wtf?" And then I got to that first boss and it fricked me up good with the tail laser timer being so much shorter and trying to ration MP. Boss fights are gonna be tough I see, especially the last few I bet.

I'd say putting Elemental + Fire into Cloud and Barret's armor slots makes Hard Mode much more manageable. Also, getting the ability Reprieve on every weapon and having the weapon with the most MP/higher MP. MP Ups/HP Ups as well.

All boss fights in chapter 17-18 are so long. Especially the shadow fight in 18. Just absurdly long

I didn’t think so. But I was well leveled and Materia was on point.

So I beat it and I have a ton of questions.

Edit: I guess there’s multiple timelines because otherwise Biggs would be dead? Is wedge dead or where did the whispers take him? Who is Zach? I’ve never played the original but I’ve had it spoiled for me that Aerith dies but I guess she didn’t in this version?

This is only 1/3rd of the game.

You can disregard what happened in the original story because it no longer matters in this new timeline.

But if you don't mind spoilers from the original game that are now different from the remake:

1) Biggs should have died at essentially the base of the pillar.

2) Wedge should have died when he fell from the top of the pillar.

3) Zach was a Soldier first class with black hair and the Buster Sword that Cloud has at the beginning of the game. You can't say much more than that without spoiling things you have not gotten to yet in the remake and which may or may not be rewritten to some degree, but:

Spoiler:
Zach should not have been alive and walking towards Midgar at the point where Cloud and party are walking away from Midgar at the end of the remake.

4) Aerith's (potential) death did not happen at Midgar, so the remake has not gotten to that point of the story yet.

Definitely play the orginal.

Nomura said in a recent interview to play the original right after this one and do not substitute the Remake for the original if you have never played it and got into FF later.

There are two other mild but significant differences in Shinra Tower.

1. In the original, Hojo is trying to make Aerith and Red XIII frick because they are both an endangered species. In the Remake he talks about having a Soldier candidate rape her.

2. Also in the original the team is captured after rescuing Aerith and President Shinra has them thrown in cells in the Drum. All of a sudden their cell doors are open and there is a trail of dead bodies leading to the President's office, where he is found dead and impaled through his chair by Sephiroth's sword.

Beat it yesterday. Immediately started to platinum. Loved it. All of it. Will just have to see what the direction is gonna be. They really left it open..doubt the defer too much from the original plot, but there will be changes and if part one was introducing those changes then im for it because it was incredible. I think the have hit the formula mix of nostalgia and new ideas very well.

Could they still frick this up? Absolutely they could. Do I think they will? Absolutely not...at least in any way that would disappoint me.

Spoilers:

Obviously Sephiroth and Aerith know whats up and it is likely because of their ties to the lifestream. I think Sephiroth has just transcended to another level through everything he has been through and is here for a final shot at winning. He is the one who wants to change destiny in his favor and now he has the power to do so.

In the next chapter I think they still hit on those nostalgia places and moments but the characters maybe shoved in a different direction at times now that the whispers have been defeated. Not a bad thing imo. Glad it ended this way so that we can speculate instead of just waiting for the next thing we know would happen had this stayed 100% true to the story.

Yep, game was damn awesome. Haven't had this much fun with a FF game since 10 years ago.

Beware of the Dressed to the Nines trophy for platting the game. Game isn't that difficult to plat besides that damn trophy. Almost gave me an aneurysm

If you take the chapters in the remake and compare them to the original, it goes 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18

Yeah elemental + lightning on your armor works well here. If it's maxed the lightning attack that circles the boss (and any other lightning based attack) will heal you. Also Cloud's Counterstance is great for hard mode. I would also use the Punisher mode counter a lot as well.

Hard mode making me appreciate the combat much more. Havent had any issues in the first two chapter. Die more to mobs and beating the bosses first try. Im sure it gets harder and im ready. Whats really cool is how hard mode is forcing me to experiment with materia more. If in not bored after the plat..I may try to speed run.

I'm at the end of the game, and as I do understand the complaints I have to give square props for the risk they took here.

This is an amazing tribute and they pulled it off

I just finished the regular campaign and all I can say is:

They captured a good bit of the feels from the original, which is the reason this is, has, and will be the only game I've ever replayed, but Sephiroth seems less of an a-hole this go around. Maybe I'm just older. Still though 50 hours and you barely leave midgar, hell the original was around 75 hours total. This thing will be 4 games at least, glad I purchased the ultimate.

Weeeeeee!
