This is really my only complaint with the battle system. Building around a stagger and then you finally get it only to be wiped away because a phase change. Really bad.

As far as my use of combat, it helped to realize that it's not meant to be an action game, so it's better to block/counterstance/parry than to dodgeroll.

Agree with this. It took me a few Chapters to figure it out, but I haven’t wiped in forever.

I finished CH 17 last night and never really used guard until the fight against the president’s son. That was the first fight where I had to play super patient.

The fight against the tank in that chapter with Aerith and Barrett took me like 35 minutes. Idk if I was doing something wrong, but it just drug on and on.

You were supposed to use magic on the big gun that popped up every now and then. It had a little subtitle "Weak Point" and would do 2k+ for me with a Thundara.

this is the exact moment i mentally checked out of this game.

i never swapped materia over, and entered the fight with basically just healing spells. i was going to exit out, but kept on just to see what the boss was like, but reached a certain point of no return and it just took forever.

It was absolutely awful lol.

I was using magic, but eventually the tank got a resistance against whatever you cast after a certain amount of damage. I only went in with Fire, lightning and blizzard as elemental damage and I guess that kind of fricked me.

I was never close to dying, but I used like 20 ethers.

ray of judgement was just about the only thing I could use to damage it. Barrett had an elemental that, like you said, nerfed most his attacks.

so i just swapped between characters to keep aggro off Aerith so i could slowly fill her ATBs to cast Ray. jesus.

YES. Absolutely hate this shite. I get so antsy whenever I stagger a boss for this reason alone.

I was really frustrated with the combat system early on because I was treating it so much like an action game. I honestly missed so many different things my first playthrough as a result. Playing on hard mode has definitely made this apparent, especially since the bosses have additions to their phases as well.

Just finished it. I loved all of the fights in CH18.

I enjoyed the story changes, but I get why others may not. I don’t think a true remake would have a bad thing, but I do respect them not taking the easy route and for wanting to give us a different story.

This may be too late for people, but if you hold "Square" during cutscenes, it brings up the menu as the boss battle starts. This allows you to change materia with no fuss.

Also about swapping materia etc,

You can treat your weapons as builds. You can customize the materia in weapon A how you like it a certain way, and then B,C, and D can be matera'd completely different and it saves the materia combo if you dont tell it to reslot materia when changing weapons.

So essentially you can have 4 totally different builds for each character saved and swap between them at will without reslotting over and over.

I'm finishing up the last few side quests before the tower.

I just beat Leviathan, which holy hell was fun. This is the first game since Soulsbornekiro games that can pump me full of adrenaline when fighting bosses. It is so well done.

You are gonna love stepping into to Shinra. If it was only Barret I’d feel like I was in the ending fight scene of any John Wick movie. The detail is stunning. Sad I’m missing it in 4K because I let the woman use the pro.

I will admit...the only time during the game the I felt slightly meh about so far was the climb up to the tower.

There have been only a handful meh moments (Mostly level design related.) But those few meh moments are completely overpowered by the wow moments.

To this point the experience has been 10/10 for me. If I wanted to be a critic I’d be giving it a 9/10

And yeah the Materia is taking a bit of time for me. I like to study and look at builds. Stayed in the Materia menu for an hour the other night. I’m okay with it mostly because I want to get a feel for what Materia I’ll be wanting to focus on for NG+.

Cuz at this point I only have one elemental Materia and that’s pretty stupid of me. Won’t happen again.

This is essentially what I did but I had "matk" build "atk" build, and "balanced" build where balance is between matk and atk. The only one I didn't do that for was Barrett and Aerith.. Aerith being obviously mage.
Barrett bc once I got the Lifesaver ability I equipped Big Bertha and loaded him up with matk, atk, and HP. Lifesaver, Regen, and Manawall and he just tanks everything and you can faceroll most fights, popping him a cura every once in a while. Gave him a few attack materia but filled most of his up with HP up, MP up, provoke, steadfast guard, chakra, barrier, and heal materia.

I haven't looked up any build guides at all, just came up with it as I learned. I too only have one elemental materia and general haven't used it. Just finished first playthrough, what a wild ride. This game stayed fun for me, minus the awful side quests and a few lagging parts (actually making you climb 59 fricking floors is DUMB.. some funny dialogue but what a waste of time).

Ready for NG+

Should have taken the elevator. It only stops every 10 floors or so. Quick battle and you’re back in the elevator.

ETA: For hard mode I would definitely move around your elemental materia from your weapon and armor depending on the situation. You can get a second if you do 24 of the 26 total side quests. Chapter 9 has 4 but with the decisions you make you can do 2 and you get locked out of the other 2. Also do the hard simulation battles in chapter 17 for the accessory you get at the end.

I played through the original FF7 the first time in basically 20 years ago and yes, the chocobo breeding was absolute tedium. It's intentionally explained vaguely and the worst part was that you had to rank them all up by winning 9 races with each of them to breed them properly so you gotta do the same stupid arse race about 30 times.

Years ago someone figured out the random number generator from the games code and figured out a way to breed a gold Chocobo without racing in about 30 minutes. You can go watch the how to videos on YT.

Liked the game so much I platinumed it . The trophy for all 9 dresses was the hardest one imo. Also, the Hard Mode VR fights and Chapter 18 in hard mode were ridiculous. Welp, on to finally play Nier Automata.

That part with the sledgehammers was just not enjoyable. That was the first fight that killed me more than once.
