100% this, I thought the exact same thing as you going in and was surprised at what a well rounded character Clive turned out to be

Still chugging along, just finished up the sequence in Kanver

Is it just me or does Kupka look like Channing Tatum in Gigachad form?

I'm still pretty early in the game and it feels incredibly choppy and on rails with constant cutscenes and random popups to detail specific features every few minutes-- I feel like I never get to actually play. Maybe I'm a bit spoiled by games like Skyrim or Fallout or Witcher 3. Does this feeling fade and we get some more consistent gameplay?

I'm fairly deep into it now (one Mother Crystal remains, no spoilers) but I've been taking my time deliberately, thoroughly exploring every nook and cranny twice and revisiting areas because previously blocked paths randomly open at unexpected times without notice.

It's still cutscene heavy but I ran through a new previously blocked area of the desert a couple days ago that provided around an hour of random battles and a couple fun coeurl fights. It feels like the balance between story and action is better now. I can kinda piece together how it's all going to end based on Ultima's vague (but still obvious) intentions, but how they bring it all to fruition will be interesting.

As an aside, I will say that the devs have done a fantastic job of making you feel exactly how shitty and horrible the world is in general, particularly towards Bearers. I haven't felt that way in a game since Witcher 3 (big praise because my favorite game ever), where I fully understood and hated the way of the world. The one particular side quest with the little girl's "lost pet" was particularly painful like a swift kick to the balls.

Guessing I'm about 4/5 the way through the first playthrough at this point and although it's a lot different than what I expected, I really dig it. The side quests don't feel completely like filler material and they seem to all tie in nicely to the main plot. The main plot itself still has a few gaping holes at the point of the story where I am, but it still feels much more solid and relatable than the last few single player FF releases, minus FF7R.

. X is my favorite and apparently that's the one where people really started to hate because it was linear compared to the previous ones (at least for the first half).

Endgame content, with the Penance quest line and the Monster Arena (and getting everything captured to be able to farm the Original Creations and Nemesis) was phenomenal. On top of that, clearing and upgrading nodes on the sphere grid to go max stats on every character, plus the ability to max out all Aeons, is still probably the deepest delve of any single player FF title.

Replaying it now, it's definitely dated and corny but still a solid story. Felt like an empty but powerful ending, which they addressed in X2 if you had the patience and desire to get 100% completion. But just the fact that you can easily sink 200+ hours into a single playthrough and still have room to max out characters and summons, keeps me coming back to replay it again every couple years.

lol this game has the longest damned boss battles in the history of games. I played for a few hours last night and towards the end, I encountered Bahamut. I figured I could finish the fight and then shut it down for bedtime.

I fell asleep in my chair sometime during the fight and woke up to see the gameover message on the screen about 30 minutes later.

ive been enjoying the game well enough and would give it an above average. The eikon boss fights though. god damn those are epic. Just did bahaumut last night and thats some straight up DBZ shite.

They are a spectacle, for sure, but I personally wouldn’t call them epic. Not a fan of how they become overly cinematic with 25% of the fight remaining, and they are way too long considering the mechanics are incredibly repetitive. It’s fun to watch play out on the screen but not overly fun to play, again just in my opinion

i think thats a fair assessment. spectacle is a better word. its a feast for the senses. mechanically challenging or innovative? no.

While I agree they aren't very challenging, what other games are doing these types of fights? They're all so different from each other in scenario, I do think it's quite innovative. I imagine we'll see quite a few games do these over the top boss fights when possible.

Fully agree. Just beat the game and out of all the Eikon fights, I really only liked two of them. Most were pretty disappointing for the reasons you highlighted.

Game had a lot of potential to be great with the combat but falls short in a few spots. Overall, game is a solid 8-8.5/10 for me, carried a lot by the story. Also, I cannot remember a game that wasn't open-world with this many sidequests. There are some really good ones but boy are there some stinkers in there as well. Pretty sure I did every one in my first playthrough but I cannot imagine having to do them again in NG+.

That's my plan. You certainly don't need to do them twice.

I thought I had read online somewhere that you had to do them again in NG+ to get the Ultima weapon but I am probably just hear saying. Although the level cap goes to 100 and the sidequests do give a lot of EXP. I guess it's an easy way to level in NG+ is what people online meant?

In terms of side quests I think you only have to do the Blacksmiths Blues side quest in order to get the ultima weapon

Lol…I thought I was nearly finished. Starting up the Origin main quest with no more side quests showing, and all of a sudden the game just shite out 20+ side quests all over the world

The side quests at the end of the game just before heading to Origin are the most meaningful. Definitely power through and complete all of them.

Why they are all stuck at the end was confusing to me. For example, I don't see why Torgal's couldn't have been slightly earlier in the game.

I think I might have finally finished all of the side quests. Still have 2 more hunts to finish. Was up until 2 AM last night and really wanted to go ahead and do The Origin quest but didn't want to get stuck in a bunch of long cut scenes and end up falling asleep in my chair during them lol. Figured I'd start this evening and allow myself plenty of time in case it's unnecessarily long.
