Fallout - which game is best

Should be getting a ps4 in the next few months. Have a PS3. Don’t have a ton of gaming time but like to immerse myself when I do.
Is it worth going into fallout 3 (game of year edition) since that was so universally loved? Or should I wait until I get the ps4 and get fallout 4? Or is New Vegas the better option?
I’m likely only to play one of these and it will take me 8+ months or maybe a year to get through it. So I want to make sure it’s the best one.

Do you prefer the story or the combat more?

Go with Vegas. I have put 130+ hours into 4, but I'm itching to go back to the previous 2. New Vegas is more polished and has a more involved companion system, and has crafting if that's your thing. I played through 3 a few times and never finished NV so that's why I lean towards that. You won't go wrong with either, though.
Not sure it happened on the PS3, but I played a lot of NV on the 360 and it had an annoying glitch (go figure) where if you "Continue" from the main screen you'd get stuck on the load. You had to do new game, let the opening cut scene start, then start, load, and you were good. Doubtful that ever got patched out.

New Vegas has a non-linear story, but probably because of that, the story is pretty bare bones. For a Bethesda game, Fallout 3 has a pretty good story even though it is told in a more linear fashion.
I think the world design is better in Fallout 3, but New Vegas looks more like classic Fallout, so it's a matter of preference.
I do not like Fallout 4 much at all.

I wish they would release 3 and New Vegas for PS4.

New Vegas was the best of the modern fallouts.
3 was as good an attempt as we are likely to see from Bethesda but it wasn’t as good as NV.
Fallout 4 isn’t a fallout game. It’s a streamlined mess with a lot of the soul of fallout removed.
Functionally, it’s a decent game but it’s a shite fallout game and a bad rpg to boot. It works better if you consider it a shooter with adventure elements because the role playing elements are watered down.

Only in name.
Less interesting questlines, less choice.
MOAR SETTLEMENTS

New Vegas, but make sure to get the Ultimate Edition. I played all 3 and NV clearly stands out as the best one. Your actions have consequences, and you have to pick a faction to side with. There is no 'right' answer. You choose how to play it. Great replay value.
Fallout 4 was disappointing.

Both? I want both to be good - but would prefer story to be better but not at the sacrifice of crappy combat.
Thanks for the responses guys - looks like NV may be the pick.

Fallout 4 is a fun game with 0 expectations. Modded New Vegas is pretty awesome though.
