Just like figuring out Underwater materia for Emerald Weapon to get the Earth Harp to trade for master materia would also be impossible. Who would think to morph one random enemy for an item you can trade.

It is possible that the instructions were lost through transition and I had completely forgotten about all of the steps it took to get through it but boy that journey was fun.

I played FF7 without a guide. I remember asking people how the hell they beat Emerald and Ruby weapon. Then I learned about Morph, Knights of the Round, Underwater, etc that I don't think I would have figured out at all without a guide (maybe Underwater since the name is pretty self-explanatory but who in the world could possibly find the KOTR without a guide ).

I played through exactly one time before buying the guide. The guide enhanced the hell out of the game and added 200-300 more hours of gameplay for me.

I always wondered how many people played FF VII once or even multiple times without even knowing about Yuffie as a party member.

Oh yeah, you have to usually put in 30 minutes in that one really random forest that you might not even walk through and then answer like five prompts correctly

FF7 came out in 97, I had 14k dialup via AOL. But I don't think even gamefaqs existed yet.

I don't even know how people figured out getting to the last temple in the original Zelda without help. Literally just a crap shoot of trial and error.

Pretty sure Nintendo Power had a detailed map of the overworld. I know I found every bush to burn and every wall to bomb but don't remember how I knew that. Once I got the red candle, I spent a lot of time just going around and burning every bush.

I had an unofficial guide that didn’t tell you about the underwater materia. It did however tell you what you needed to do to beat emerald weapon under the time limit so that’s what I did. This guide thought the items you get for beating emerald and ruby weapon were just sort of trophies. It didn’t mention you could trade them for the master materias and gold chocobo.

I used that guide to do everything it said to do and by the end of grinding for the bred gold chocobo and levels to take on ruby and emerald, I was well over 100 hours. I remember the timer on my save file was stuck at 99:59:59

Sonic 3. In Casino Night Zone you reach these drums and there’s nothing that indicates how it works. You have to push up and down back and forth to get it to move. It’s in the instructions manual. You never use them again after that level.

The name of the gnome in King's Quest I was ridiculous as well. A lot of that game was pretty damn hard to figure out, my cousin and I spent hours of our life trying to figure it out. We finally figured out how to get all the shite (the bad less points way) and got back to the king and couldn't ever get the game to end. You had to bow to that MF'er so his old arse would die.

Come to think of it, pops was kind of a dickhole to buy that game for his 8yo son.

This unofficial guide was actually better than the official one released by Brady Games.

Yes!! Man I wish I had that still laying around. Whoever wrote it was all about not spoiling anything and I remember it saying to save before the aerith scene and never overwrite it again. Didn’t talk about anything afterward until you turned the page

I think I do still have the poster that came in it laying around somewhere

I had to break out a game guide to get the last bottle in Ocarina of Time.
(Specifically, location of the last large Poe)
