I see that it is $14.99 in the playstation store right now on the E3 sale. Having never played the first two would I be completely lost?

My other options are

Assassin's Creed: Origins or Nioh

I would start with DS1. They just remastered it and it's the best of the three to me.

Get the deluxe edition if your going to get DS3. And no, you don’t have to play the other ones to understand what’s going on. There’s a narrative there but it’s not necessary to enjoy the game. I just finished the Soulborne gauntlet (Bloodborne and DS1-3) from March to a week ago, and it’s some of the most fun I have ever had in gaming.

Dark Souls May be easier or harder depending on your play style. Dark Souls is a much slower game. You move slower and your enemies move slower and equipment is more important imo. Also, at least in Dark Souls 2 and I think 1, magic was pretty viable and powerful of you want to play ranged.

If you struggle in Bloodborne due to being bad at dodging, you can definitely do better in Dark Souls. Dark Souls lets you play sword and shield and mitigate a lot of the need to dodge everything.

the story is as deep or shallow as you want it to be. depends on how much digging and item descriptions you care to read.

i played 3 first, and got super into the lore. watched tons of videos, read everything, but it wasnt necessary at all to enjoy the game.

its not a "cinematic" game. there arent a million cut scenes that wont make sense unless youve played 1 and 2. youll be fine.

Get DS1 Remastered and DS3 deluxe. Play 1 first. Amazing games. 3 has some great callbacks to 1 that will be lost on you if you don’t play 1 first

2 is fine, just the world isn't as good as the first dark souls. Level design is way better in the first dark souls, but combat is better in 2.

Some love it, some hate it. There's good and bad to it. It's just different.

DS3 is best imo. Upgrading is more straight forward.

I liked 2. Everything was different than 1, I guess that’s why some people didn’t like it.

2 is fine, but it’s by far the worst of the series. Different director who got canned and replaced. It was ok but the world design, enemies, lore, and bosses are all inferior. It was developed by FromSoft’s B Team (since Miyazaki and the A Team were developing BB concurrently). It really shows.

Just don’t rush to play 2 lol. 1 and Bloodborne are all-timers, 3 is a great game. All had the same director, Hidetaka Miyazaki.

quote:

Around halfway into development, the higher-ups decided that the direction that Dark Souls II was taking was undesirable and Shibuya was booted from the project. Tanimura was then handed the reigns as sole director of the project and the entire world and narrative were rewritten. Characters were remade entirely and existing assets from earlier in development had to be slotted into the game as best they could and stitched into the new narrative. The production continued this way and Dark Souls II as we knew it at launch was born.

I get he QoL improvements in DS3, but the world and lore from DS1 are so much better.

I never really got in to the lore, so that didn't make much difference to me. Once I got to Blight town I was over DS1. Just frustrating for the sake of being frustrating to me.

Blightown isn't really that bad, yes the poison lake sucks but once you get past it
