Counter Strike - why still so popular?

Me and my dorm mates played the original in big LAN parties, and it was a very good game. However, we seemed to trend to Ghost Recon and the Battlefields and moved on from CS.
What I don't understand is the popularity of CSGO 7-8 years after its release. I'm sure it was a very solid shooter, but what is it that it makes it so enduring?
I've never played it, but nothing (graphics, game play, etc.) really stands out from what I've seen on TV. What is it that keeps it going?

Because it's by far the most skill intensive FPS game

Super high skill. It’s great for competitive gaming

What skill is involved besides aiming and positioning with cover? I never played cs before a few days ago but I’ve been enjoying deathmatches.

Spray patterns for each gun and smokes for starters. You could spend months on those two things alone.

besides aiming
It's the most pure form of shooter in existence. Aim is the most important piece to the puzzle. Watch some high level play of pros snapping headshots
Throwables play a huge part of the strategy as well. The maps are so well designed

For one it’s had probably the longest pro scene today than most games.
It’s highly competitive and is very intense. It’s great for competitive play, and a good spectator sport to boot.

Wait, people actually play Ghost Recon?

Too many hackers play this game.

Because it's an RTS built inside of an FPS. The Meta is always changing with updates. The usage of utility and communication is critical. You can have the best aim, but if your comms and smokes suck you're going to get curb stomped. There's also the economy meta that gets severely overlooked in regular matchmaking.
Watch a high level pro match and you'll see all the nuances that have to be taken into account when playing. It's a game that's impossible to master.

The original game (and its expansion packs) had a very decent multiplayer aspect. Had lots of level variety, especially for the time period it was rleased, and good gun play.
Now it quickly fell off a cliff, but the original was a good time.

Low ranks are about positioning and shooting.
High ranks everyone knows how to shoot and position themselves. It’s all about teamwork, smokes, flashes etc.

I saw it on my friend activity feed - wrong CS buddy.

CS:GO is free.. though I of course paid for it back in 2014. Now you can pay $14.99 for 'Prime' status which basically secures you cheater-free competitive matches as you're queued with other 'Prime' members. There are other benefits too but I don't really know.
