I know this board mostly discusses video games, but I’m looking for suggestions on popular/fun board games. Mostly looking for engaging, conversation provoking strategy games among groups of 5-8 or so.
For reference. Love secret hitler, code names, ticket to ride. Wife doesn’t like Catan. Grew up playing risk and monopoly and like those.
Thanks in advance

I really like this one: Atlantic Storm

At large holiday gatherings we always break out Ticket to Ride and it provides 3 or 4 hours of great conversations and fun in the background of some really competitive strategic gamesmanship.

Wingspan is pretty good . Engine building game . Make an aviary of birds to score points.

Coyote, King of Tokyo, pandemic are some favorites.
Galaxy truckers is fun, made by the same guy that made codenames

Legacy Risk. Have to buy a new board after 13 or so games but it makes for a great game night. Board never plays out the same.

7 Wonders may work?
I picked up Detective: A Modern Crime Board Game but haven't gotten to it yet. There are other multiplayer detective games as well that may work.
Another game I read about that sounds in your wheelhouse is "The Resistance" and similar titles to it.

Mafia and D&D are good options for strategy and engaging conversations.
Here’s a link to rules for Mafia:

The Resistance
The OG secret hitler game, and I like this one much more. We have both and usually choose to play the resistance

Advanced Squad Leader!
No, in seriousness though, the ultimate strategy/conversation game is Diplomacy. You have to have seven people to make it work, though. Also it would be best if those seven people either already hated each other or were looking for a reason to hate each other.

Most of the best games don't support quite that many players. But a couple I like that can play 6 are Power Grid and Carcassonne (with an expansion).
Scythe is a good one that technically can support 7 players (with an expansion) but it's much too slow to be fun with that many unless everyone has played it a lot.
Catan is fun at first but it has some serious design flaws that come out when you've played it a few times.
