What in your opinion is the best metal gear game. My personal favorite would be metal gear rising revengence, but what is your favorite?

From a gameplay perspective?
hard to beat MGS phantom pain.
taking in what it was for the time and overall narrative, the original MGS for PS1.

MG or MGS would be my personal choice.
I like MGS2 but it is intentionally derivative of MGS.
Played some MGS3 and I know it is highly regarded but I wasn’t nearly as interested in it as the copies of MG and MG2 packed in with it.
Hell, I had a lot of fun with some of the gaiden games like Acid, Acid 2, and Portable Ops as well.

Not seeing anyone talking about metal gear rising revengence. Its like devil may cry and metal gear combined, its fantastic.

1 was my first so I hold it in high esteem.
2 was jarring initially, but I think it’s a pretty solid entry at this stage. The colonel’s codec calls hit different in 2023. Hideo was on top of media narratives, echo chambers, and information distribution in the digital era before anyone else.
3 was a solid mix of espionage and survival.
5 had so much potential but the story fell flat with me. Kojima and konamis bitter divorce tarnished this potentially amazing project. I enjoyed what was there, at least.

2 definitely qualifies as “before its time”, which is a label a lot of people love to give to failed properties. In this case, it is true. Does not help that the back half of the game was a disjointed mess because 9/11 meant they had to redo everything from between the fight in the VR environment against the Ray models to the Solidus fight. Can’t have video of NYC being partially leveled by the Arsenal Gear…
The colonel doing things like telling you to turn off the system power made me think of some “outside the box” solutions from other games, such as the “reset the system” puzzle from X-Men on Sega Genesis. Turned out he was just corrupted and spouting shite instead.

playing and beating metal gear solid over christmas break as a 6th grader - that was an eye opening experience coming from mario etc. from the beginning with Meryl and her bouncy arse to the cig smoking and genome soldiers + mechanized nuclear powered attack vehicles. wow

Remake of the codec scene
Its funny but also seems like something that could actually happen with ai. I remember seeing this a few months ago and being like wow what?

I never owned a ps3.
Watched some clips of mgs4, but I don’t have much of an opinion since I never had an opportunity to play it.

Yeah, I can agree with that. They should have stuck with their original vision. It would have caused some outrage, but it is a fictional spy thriller. Actual violence happens every day, yet we derive enjoyment from media representations of conflict. If we are going to apply this standard that violence is potentially harmful to your audience’s sensibilities then why make the game at all? I hate the idea of self censorship.
I can remember being so confused to go from vr combat to a partially destroyed nyc with no context. That sequence was so disjointed.

MGS2 story alone makes it a classic. Gameplay is solid too.

I think MGS5 has some of the best gameplay of a video game in general but I wish the story was told better. Overall I think MGS3 is my favorite of the series. I still need to finish 2 but played most of it.

MGS1-3 are masterpieces. Snake Eater is probably my favorite.

Its one of the best and sadly underrated action games I've ever played.
