What do you mean by excitement? I know plenty of people that were hyped for Rift and the Old Republic. I know plenty of people that are hyped for Guild Wars 2, Diablo 3 and Blade & Soul. I guess there isn't much beyond that though.

Until they stop 10 million + (just wow) from paying then NO! Hell EQ was still pay viable until now and that game is 13 years old!
Players demand more now and it's hard to capture the feeling people had that transitioned from D&D to EQ, for us pencil and paper players the transition to graphical play was magical, now it's OMG what graphics and epeen items can I get.

I play the shite out of it.
Muppet flew to Alderaan, and said in General, "Spoiler Alert: Everyone on this planet dies".
Good times.
Were I to design the perfect MMO, I would take the depth and questing mechanisms of EQ1, the graphics of SWTOR, and everything else from the early era of Star Wars Galaxies.
One day, somebody is going to put it all together.

I learned quickly that I never learned how to read or use a module. . .My buddies and I used to just make shite up.

I agree. Someone take UOs general gameplay and stick it with current graphics please. I would probably get divorced.
Every time these threads come up, I can always count on you to knight for early UO gameplay, and I whole heartedly agree.
I still kinda dig their artwork too. It was just perfect for its time and place, just with all the issues of being one of the first in the genre.

That's cool. I followed its development and was in middle school. Got it pretty much at launch. Still makes me feel nostalgic.

Just a lack of a good one to replace WoW as the feature game..

why do we need every MMO to be a no skill hotkey MMO
Because they are trying to appeal to mass market.
And just because a game uses hotkeys does not mean it takes no skill to play. You still have to know how to play your character.
Please explain to me how you want a game to work that doesn't use hotkeys ? DC Universe ? Age of Conan ? Yeah, how are those doing ?

Growing stale, not dying.
But technology is having a hard time keeping up with what MMO's really need.

I would gander to say Final Fantasy XIV answers most of your problems.. and then some. Give you a non-broken game now, with HUGE depth and an awesome world.. but people can't get past the botch that was release, it's going to take a good E3 showing this year to show people it's not the same game I guess.
P.S: I started in Jan. of this year, I refused to play the game on release, and the guy in charge of the game now is one of the best gaming directors in the biz. (they fired the guy that created XIV..

Nah. it is just that the masses don't have the cutting edge technology, and you need an MMO to appeal to the masses to make money.

what company with a good budget is willing to take a risk nowadays on an mmo? They are barely taking risks in console games. The people willing to take a risk don't have the money to compete with the big boys.
The company that just made SWTOR.....

No doubt. I still play from time to time.

What makes it a risk? They have a light and dark side (horde and alliance). It's game play is like most other MMO's with hotbars where you press 1 and you do your skill. Then you have your battlegrounds. It's just the WoW core with their own little nuances. Making this game wasn't a big risk. I'm not saying SWTOR is a bad game but every mmo is following the same build with 2 different opposing sides so they can have a pvp/pve mix to appeal to the masses.

Sometime late this year or early next year.. keep your eyes pealed for e3, they are unveiling "2.0" at that time.. everything they have done, and show to us so far is incredible.

Check out the XIV 2.0 page. Lots of cool stuff there including a timeline in one of the PDFs you can download at the bottom.
LINK
According to that, 2.0 will go live for PC somewhere during September or October. During this time, the PS3 beta software will become available and (hopefully) PS3 beta will take place on the same servers PC players currently populate.
So sometime between December 2012 and January 2013, you should start seeing FFXIV 2.0 in stores for both PC and PS3.

I still play on one of the top freeshards, but the #'s online steadily decline so I don't invest much time. I may try SWTOR soon.
