Check out that video. He explains A LOT of useful info for a beginner.
You're going to need a little know how to put together, but everything you'll need is available online. Plenty of how-to guides can be found if you Google "how to build a computer".

For $1,000, you can build a top notch gaming PC. But the first things you need to figure out are which base system do you want to go with. The two main ones are Intel and AMD. This decision will determine the type of Mother Board and Processor you'll want to get.

Once you have that down, everything will build from there. I highly recommend looking at Newegg.com for custom bundles put together by other computer builders to get an idea of what you'll need.

Building your own computer is the cheapest way to get a gaming PC these days. Good luck!

Look, 2.0 may very well put the game on par with some of the other games on the market, but it hasn't come to fruition yet.

All I'm saying is that I think it still sucks in its current state, and there are better MMOs to spend money on until it sees the "renaissance" you are so sure of.

Problem is, like this thread discussed, most of those MMOs are progressively becoming more and more stale. They become the same Alliance vs. Horde, PVE/PVP mashup with the same gameplay mechanics. Everyone is looking for that WoW Killer. FFXIV is not that game, because it's not WoW-like.

You stand there and autoattack until your "TP" reaches a high enough level to use a special attack that does more damage. That's right - most of your leveling experience consists of attacking an enemy and then waiting to press another key.

You can't compare XIV to XI without comparing the battle systems. XI operated on the same "auto attack, build TP, use weaponskill." XIV, however, is undeniably faster paced but still manages to stay away from "number sequence battle" like any WoW clone. I feel this allows more strategic flow to battle, which is why I feel XI proved to have the deepest battle system in an MMO ever.

But to address the waiting game... Auto attacking while waiting for your TP bar to fill, in this case. Perhaps if you're only playing the early levels, sure there isn't much variety in combat just like any other RPG/MMO. But having several classes above level 30, just standing and waiting for my TP bar to fill doesn't happen... ever.

The world also feels lifeless and samey compared to other Square Enix creations, especially Final Fantasy XI. It's like they copied and pasted the entire world and gave everything different names.

Yep. Which is something that has been addressed plenty of times in interviews and letters from the producer. The world is lacking in variety of locations, unique vistas, etc. This is nothing new. SE has shown plenty of evidence clearly showing the world redesign in 2.0. Is the world in it's current state detrimental to the game? Nah. It is going to change.

still half-broken piece of junk like FFXIV

I'm beginning to think I should be saying "To each his own." Playing the game even in it's current state, I don't see "half-broken." I don't see minorly broken. I see a game where what I want to do works fine.

But it's safe to play now? Still fun?

I'm having fun. Safe to play though? Like any good MMO, it'll still suck your life away. ;)

Just remember, the name of the game now is change.

I love the amount of One-star reviews on Amazon's page for XIV from 2010. >.>

Also, what is the state of SWTOR? How is it holding up after release?

There must be a free trial right?

Once 2.0 software is released for download for PC players in September or October, the game will go back to temporary free-to-play mode. They will resume payments after 2.0 hits retail a few months later.

Other than that, get the game for CHEAP ($10 from Amazon's digital download), and enjoy your month of free play time.

I understand that XIV is an MMO, and not a stand alone. . .but after XIII, frick those guys.

I wholeheartedly agree. SE has a lot to prove to me before I put any effort into one of their single player renditions.

I like that better than what I read about classes when it first came out.

Luckily, this is happening with this month's patch. Paladin, Warrior, Dragoon, Monk, Bard, White Mage, and Black Mage.

Is this the same Final Fantasy MMO from like 3 years ago? I hated that one.. get to level 15 or so and then you're forced to group even for grinding (which is most of what the game is)

That was FFXI. Huge grindfest. And unless your were a White Mage, Red Mage or Bard, looking for a party consisted of a good portion of your playing time.

So wait, is the game good now? Worth a shot?

FFXIV is worth a shot if you want something different than the countless WoW clones this thread is discussing. A lot of FFXIV's concepts will be pretty foreign to new players, but in time they earn their place in the game world. I've been through closed beta, open beta and initial release of XIV and I'll be the first to tell you the game was a royal mess... albeit graphically beautiful.

That being said, the game has improved considerably. Gameplay has almost been completely revamped, with more changes and improvements coming every patch. My main hook for XIV is to watch out for what's coming next.

FFXIV's changes aren't done yet. Endgame content is still maturing. Classes are being phased out in favor of classic Jobs (WHM, BLM, WAR, MNK, etc). All the while the game's inner workings are being tweaked constantly.

My point is if you're looking for a different MMO experience, try it out. Just know going in you're playing a prequel of sorts to the release of FFXIV 2.0.

Sounds like you are talking about FFXI. It was a lot like that. From what I've heard, FFXIV has made it so you don't have to group up to grind like that.

Yes. Leveling is 100% soloable. Avatar battles and dungeons however... well prepare to group up and have fun.

Check out the XIV 2.0 page. Lots of cool stuff there including a timeline in one of the PDFs you can download at the bottom.

According to that, 2.0 will go live for PC somewhere during September or October. During this time, the PS3 beta software will become available and (hopefully) PS3 beta will take place on the same servers PC players currently populate.

So sometime between December 2012 and January 2013, you should start seeing FFXIV 2.0 in stores for both PC and PS3.

Battlefield 3
Skyrim
The Binding of Issac (because it's that good!!!)
Left 4 Dead 2
Arkham City
The Witcher 2

just to name a few....

I can't believe this is a real thread. The game was a terrible joke at all stages of original development and at launch, and still has a long way to go before it's a serious competitor to anything.

Perhaps its just not your cup of tea?

The milestones that XIV has crossed are truly amazing given the year's time since release. To say it isn't improving drastically is simply being purposefully negative.
That summarizes any WoW clone MMO.

In Rift and WoW I always felt like I was approaching each battle with a huge hammer just trying to smash each enemy as fast as possible with as little let up as possible. What it turned into was a set sequence of my action bar that I reproduced on EVERY SINGLE ENEMY.

In XI, and now XIV, combat is more about acting and reacting, something WoW never grasped. Especially in boss battles, each engagement in battle in WoW was scripted to predictability. Luckily that isn't the case in XIV, I feel. he combat is much more spontaneous.
I feel like I've played every iteration of FFXIV from beta to present. I for one can vouch that it is one of the most persistently improving MMOs in the wild.

The Director of FFXI's glory days is not only radically changing, but also gutting and rebuilding FFXIV in pretty amazing ways.

Remembering the ambitious but flawed game that XIV was on release day, I can hardly imagine this is the same game today.

Anyways, just chiming in. I'm hopeful that as the game goes through a literal rebirth later this year, people will take notice and XIV can shake off a lot of the negative stigmas it's garnered.

I do think they need to be slightly larger but not what's on the OP's pic.

You're right. They need to be bigger and with more exclamation points!
Of course the image is tongue in cheek.
