Anybody got anything similar to risk, but a little more reliant on strategy than luck?

I need to get one for the family for Christmas. I like the more RPG stuff (as evidenced by my question on here a couple of days ago) but my dad might not be patient enough for that so I'm looking for something in between

Ticket to Ride is a great family intro.
Lords of Waterdeep is strictly a book are game, but has a great fantasy theme.
Colt Express is different but fun.
If you want something odd, with social deduction... code names or Deception:Murder in Hong Kong.

I've been digging some of the new expansion for Betrayal at the House on the Hill. If you want something competitive then we have been playing Cosmic Encounter which runs a bit more wacky than true strategy. It has some good political aspects though.

Clue is a good one. More serious than social though, but definitely fun if you like strategic games.

Me trying to explain it won't do the game any justice.

It's a turn-based strategy game (up to 4-players). You collect resources based on dice rolls, then have to use the resources to build roads, towns, or cities.

I had it on the Xbox360 and played the fck out of it. You can dl it from Google play if you want to give it a try. (Admittedly, I've only played it on video game, and never the actual board game.)

Small world. Pretty light weight, easy to teach, no dice rolling, area control and conquering like risk.

Five Tribes is my favorite game. Small World is good as well followed by Catan

Lots of great games already mentioned! Splendor is another game that everybody loves and usually want to play again.

Mysterium is a great clue-like game using abstract art as clues. Plays great with 4-7 people.
