Am I the only one who hated Super Mario 64?

I grew up with the Nintendo/Super Nintendo Mario games. I was used to the 2D graphics of the games that when Super Mario 64 came out on Nintendo 64, I could not get into the game and the different format than past Mario games.

I loved it immediately. One of my most memorable gaming experiences was playing it for the first time along with wave race and pilotwings over New Years weekend in 96-97

You may actually be the only one. It was the greatest leap forward in video game history and an incredibly enjoyable game. I could pick it up tomorrow and still have a blast trying to get all 120 stars.

My personal record is 10 hours, which is hilarious considering speedrunners do it in just under an hour and forty minutes.

Nah, it's not just you. I didn't get the hype, either, and I was a pretty early adopter on the N64. Most of my time was spent playing Shadows of the Empire and later Rogue Squadron.

I still enjoy both. Super Mario 64 was a natural and perfectly executed extension of Mario’s platforming into three dimensions.

God I miss the first month of having my N64.

Mario 64 was amazing for it's time (and is still pretty damn fun today).

Mario Kart 64 ate up most of my after school time.

I feel like Pilotwings is often forgotten, which is a shame.

Yes, I absolutely loved the game and spent a ton of hours on it when we rented the N64 console from the local video store. In all honesty, I should make my wife drive during road trips so that I can play it some more on the Switch.

We did the same thing. I would sometimes rent it and head to Bay St. Louis with it to play all weekend. I think my parents finally bought it for me for Christmas (along with zelda OoT) because they were probably sick of putting down a deposit to rent that thing ha

I didn't like Mario 64 at all. Just the title screen was enough to make me not want to play it, but I tried it anyway and it was ugly and annoying.

Castlevania and Donkey Kong on the N64 were even worse. At least Zelda was good.

All of the n64 games were too hard and I never beat any of them

They should’ve had pc back then so I could download cheats

The good Mario game on the N64 was Paper Mario.

Not the only one. I hated it when it came out too.

Honestly though it’s prob got more to do with age and growing up than anything. I was a kid when the original NES came out so by the time N64 came out I was an adult so it just wasn’t appealing at all.

I'm not willing to say that it was the greatest leap forward in video game history, but it was probably the greatest translation of a series that was the king of side scrollers to 3d.
