This topic is impossible. You could debate this for the rest of the week and never come to a consensus.
For shits and giggles here is who I have been drinking on recently since in no way will I be able to pick a top 5.
Sixpoint
Dogfish Head
Parish (I know its only one beer but I feel we talk so much about this place it should be in this conversation just on hype and buzz alone)
Victory
Southern Tier
Russian River
Now a What you can Actually buy in LA list:
Parish
Green Flash
Stillwater
Sierra Nevada
Anchor Brewing

no love for Avery....interesting
They were among my semi-finalists. Hell, there were a lot of breweries I considered, yet didn't make my list. Avery, Founders, Southern Tier, Sierra Nevada, Mikkeller, Lagunitas. A top dozen would have been a lot easier.

But then you would still be cutting some out. I could probably name 50 great breweries that you would be fine with in a random top 5.

parents were in Sonoma recently and they went to the brewpub. said it was some of the best beer they have ever had.

I named a dozen off the top of my head easy and could probably name a dozen more.

Bear Republic has a cool brew pub. Their brewery set up is crazy. There are pipes going across the ceiling of the pub to convey the cracked malt to the brewing area. Its a holdover from when they redesigned the brewery.
Great beer indeed.

True. I mean, here we are on page 3 without a Three Floyds mention.

Yes, impossible topic. I would just start listing the brewers that have many different styles of beer and all that I've tasted have been very good.
Brooklyn
Victory
Jester King
Lefthand
Bells
honorable mention
Unibroe
Ommengagng
I don't think these 2 do much besides belgian style. But they do it very well.
Of course I'm not even mentioning the great belgian brewers.....it just goes on and on....Lagunitas, Full Sail........

This is is tough question but I would go:
Founders
Bells
Dogfish Head
Stone
Live Oak
I have not had enough from RR, Lost Abbey, Three Floyds and others to accurately rank them. We are truly heading into the Golden Age of American brewing

I like this concept, I have limited experience to call them the best, but these are my favorites (in no particular order):
Spoetzl (Shiner)
Rahr
Abita
St. Arnold
Alaskan
