Lupe Tortilla is garbage…the best Tex Mex in Houston is at Candente.

We were down in South Texas during Snowmageddon, we were told to try a restaurant in Kingsville, El Dorado Restaurant. The lady is from Guadalajara, Mexico. Food and drinks were some of the better. We ended of there the next night, the owner remembered each drink we had ordered the night before.

El Paso on Coursey. The last time I ate there I got sick as a dog. Something they fed me was well past it's expiration date.

I bailed on Nifa's after they got rid of the India. Did Tio Javi's continue on with the green sauce after the rebranding?

What did you get?
two taco plate with cochinita pibil taco and a taco al carbon. The tortillas was old, not warmed up, they fell apart when I picked them up. The pork was dry (which I understand happens) and there was maybe 2 pieces of beef on the tacos al carbon. My youngest’s quesadilla was burned and we had to ask for the charge of the table side guacamole to be taken off because we didn’t get it.

Like I said in my first post - maybe it was an off day. Can’t be a language barrier because my husband and I speak Spanish

Try the Duck Empanadas at Mestizos in Baton Rouge! We had to order the appetizer twice. Way too good.

Weird.

We've been going to Blue Corn pretty much since they've been open and I can't say I've had a bad meal there. We've tried just about everything on the menu by this point...everything is good.

Ceviche, enchiladas, tampiquena, carnitas, tacos, al pastor, etc. Even the texmex is pretty good. All of it is good.

Zippy’s food is always disappointing. I have several friends that love the place, though. It’s a great spot to drink frozen margs and daqs, but the food is extremely mid.

Tex mex is what most Americans assume is Mexican food.
If you're getting chips and salsa when you sit down it's likely not a real Mexican joint. But that's something we come to expect with Mexican.

Mestizo is the best for freshness and quality of ingredients.

Jim does do a great job with his recipes!
I enjoy going there when in BTR.

Never noticed that taste. I enjoy their Queso, an appetizers. I also like Pico with my chips.

Aw man, I love the salsa at Mestizo. You're right it is quite different from other places, but I haven't noticed the ketchup-y taste.

Modesto also has great salsa, although they really skimp on it unless you ask for more. Maybe they were throwing too much away and this was the solution.

I've been to Superior a few times and was never impressed. Never really understood the hype.

I heard La Carreta on Bluebonnet has taken a downturn. Was told it was disgustingly bad now.

Jim got the TexMex magic from his dad, Carlos. The seafood tamal there is one of the best dishes I've ever had. We get a few friends together (14-16 or so) and have Jim put together a dinner with wine pairings for each course, Incredible experience.
