Wife’s birthday is coming up and I’m wanting to get a hotel in town (Houston) for a couple of nights. Looking for ideas on hotel location, restaurants, and pre-dinner drinks/night cap locations. I’ve got a few ideas of my own but looking for additional inspiration and I know F&D won’t let me down.

Hotel Lancaster is very nice, small hotel downtown in Theater area. .5 from Mortons, Minute Maid park, next door to theaters and right by several other attractions. Some rooms are smaller, but they give you nice extras and service is good.

Be careful about downtown, depending on when you go. November, and you’re good. You better see when the Astros playoff games are. They will make everything downtown (and probably a lot of places) expensive and crazy busy.

Have dinner at Bludorn. Chef/owner is a Daniel Boulud alumn. Great chef with outstanding service and wine program.

It's been a few years but I did this a few years ago and was a huge hit. We stayed at the Houstonian and had them drive us to Steak48, and spend the next day just chillin in the suite/spa/pool.

Downtown Houston isn't awful but it's a bit quiet. Not exactly the pizaz of downtown Chicago or New York (especially after 5pm). Consider something nice out by the Galleria like the Omni or 4 seasons. If you do want downtown, the Marquis is hot these days and I love the Le Meridien.

As for food, I'm a nutjob about State of Grace. I eat there every time I'm in town. I've enjoyed Xin Chao lately and have yet to try Xochi or Uchi although both get good reviews. I also have a friend telling me to try Musafer.

Also you can tell her she can pick out any present she wants at Gordy and Son.

Great central location too.
