Yeah, the the pub and Steins have some really crazy beers. The pub is always having tasting of cask/kegs that I am sure no other places in the state have.
Dan Stein made a comment to our group at a tasting that he can get almost any beer, but if it is not through normal distribution systems, it is next to impossible to make any money. He brings stuff in and sells it because of his love for beer and his goal to get people to try new stuff.

It is definitely illegal for bars or stores to sell beers that are not distributed in their areas or states. That is why the three tier systems are soooo dumb. A bar cannot purchase and then sell beer that they acquired by any other means than through their distributor. The Chimes, Cove, etc are bringing in that beer illegally from Texas, FL or other states
I don't have the desire to look up the legality of this matter, but I'd be hard pressed to believe that these retailers are openly advertising and selling beers that are not distributed in LA knowing that they would be subject to fines and legal ramifications. The Chimes isn't exactly flying under the ABC radar.

Thanks for clearing that up.
Is it NOLA or Lazy Magnolia that has the deal with one of the big boys for distribution? I know they have taken alot of tap space from Abita.

I doubt it is just Louisiana politics. All states have trouble with the beer distribution laws. There was a bar in PA I believe that got into a lot of trouble for selling "unregistered" beers. Whatever the hell that means. At least we can get high ABV beers unlike Mississippi. That place sucks for beer lovers.

Yall do realize that Yuengling hasnt been in the South at all for all that long. They didnt even have any presence in the south until they bought the Tampa company out. I dont see Louisiana getting it until they buy a new distribution plant closer. They can only make so much beer.

Yes. I wonder how they get away with this?
Hmm

For you NOLA area folks, don't forget that the WYES beer tasting is coming up on June 5th.

Not everyone gets a way with it, the law typically looks the other way. Except in Pennsylvania:

I probably know you somehow. I know Dan pretty well and do all the tasting stuff at the Avenue Pub and Stein's Deli.

Nah, I am not into it that much as far as attending things. I just read alot.
The only time I met Dan was at a beer vs wine with cheese taste off thing at Cork and Bottle a year or so ago. Haven't made it to Avenue Pub yet, but it is going to start happening soon.

You should stop over there this weekend. Stone is releasing a bunch of beers for Jazz Fest. Lots of good vintages, casks, and specialty stuff. Polly over at the Avenue has really turned that place around. Great food + great beer = good times.

quote:Hell some states (maybe even PA) only allow you to buy liquor from state run liquor stores, and in some states the # of liquor licenses is so limited by law that you can't get a new one unless someplace closes down.

There was actually a big bust in NYC for some bars selling shite without it being cleared with the state and distro companies.

Abita apparently also keeps them from being distributed anywhere west of Alabama.

I don't get the Yuengling hype on this board. I'll drink it over miller/bud when in states where it's available (since it's at the same price point), but it's not like a great microbrewery putting out great beers. Y'all should be more excited about getting Stone Brewery in La instead of yearning for Yeungling.
