Why isn’t much of our food clearly labeled to show where it is made?

Looking through my recent grocery store haul almost everything in boxes says ‘Distributed by’ but not ‘Manufactured by’ or ‘Made in’. Am I to assume USA if it isn’t marked otherwise?
Why not clearly show this information?

Bc food companies likely don't know you to know a lot about these things

You'd immediately stop buying half of your groceries

I only buy my food at farmers markets. The labels usually say “made by Dave” or whomever the farmer was.
But it’s usually Dave.

Because the origin of a processed food item will vary depending on season, price, weather.....just because the wheat in your Bunny Bread is US grown today, doesn’t mean it won’t be Canadian next week.

I recently started buying only local greens and meat. It’s more expensive but the food is much better and I know exactly where it came from.

First quit buying a bunch of boxed stuff. That is a big step in the right direction.

Because there’s no law stating that it has to. That’s the answer, plain and simple.

There's also the phrase "packaged in the USA" that should be catching your attention.
I notice on frozen seafood (now that we live over 600 miles from a coast) that it may be caught wild on the US west coast, it's then shipped to Asia for processing and freezing and then comes back here for final packaging.
