My wife is an artist, then. That black skillet does many things perfectly.

Why can't it just be both???

Saban is from West Virginia and it’s biscuits, but cornbread is close!

I agree with Nate. Both have their place and at my house both are excellent. I am so sorry some of you are forced to choose.

Damn I love both of them when done correctly but I gotta go with the biscuit. I even named a blue heeler biskit cause I like em so much.

Saban said biscuits because good cornbread is hard to find. Hes also from Ohio
He is essentially saying saying cornbread is better but most people cannot make it right which is true. Everyone knows good cornbread is better than a biscuit. The question should be regular cornbread or fried cornbread?

Fried or baked?
Both are good and very easy to make.
I still can't understand what the problem is with people who can't make good cornbread.

Call me crazy, but I’ve never liked cornbread.

something worse than an OT post transfer, a Rant post transfer.

Why? I love a good buttermilk biscuit. They’re two different things that I like with different meals. I don’t see why they should be compared or why one is clearly “better” than the other.
This in a nutshell. I wouldn't eat cornbread with my grits, eggs and bacon in the morning, any more than I'd eat biscuits with my red beans and rice for dinner.
I like both pretty much equally and it all depends on the meal as to which I prefer.

Can't eat mustard greens and biscuit.

When?
Breakfast? Dinner? Desert?
Fried chicken, fried fish, stew, meatloaf, red beans and rice?
Too many variables!

I think one of the secrets to great cornbread is a hot cast iron skittle when you pour in the batter, puts a great crust on the bottom of the cornbread. Not a fan of sweet cornbread either, don’t want a piece of cake with my meal.
I’m old school too, I love leftover cb in a glass covered with milk.

Mustard greens in a bowl with lots of (vinegary) juice ladled in, over a slice of cornbread, is one of my favorite meals.

Biscuits all the way for me, cornbread is for the PWT, especially if some moron loads it up with sugar. BLAH!!
Posted on 8/18/18 at 5:17 pm to RMac1
Absolutely. I get my skillet hot and ready with oil in the bottom before I ever pour in the batter.
I cut out the sugar also unless I’m making cornbread muffins.

Please. Sopping up collard green liquor without cornbread is heresy of the highest order.

General rules for me:
First the absolutes - cornbread with beans and greens and biscuits in the morning. No sugar in cornbread and soda in biscuits sets them apart. Use buttermilk in both and White Lilly or Martha White are table stakes.
For cornbread - generally speaking an 8” black skillet is preferable to a 10”. Heat the skillet in the oven as it warms up and use bacon grease and not oil. Add cracklings or jalapeños, but never sugar. Fried cornbread might be the best of all but will take years off your life.
Biscuits - the simple pleasure of a buttered, hoop cheese, ham, or tenderloin biscuit cannot be overstated. Canned biscuits are tolerable. Well seasoned flat pans (cookie sheets) are underrated. Use silpats on new pans.
Finally - neither is better. But biscuits are probably more southern.
