At fine dining places, then we split something. Never even consider it elsewhere, except an occasional house-made gelato at Frank's Pizza.

Had the Salty Malty Ice Cream Pie at GW Fins a while back and it was very good.

Depends on the place for us. Nicer place when we're having a big family dinner with parents and siblings, yeah we're probably all getting dessert and coffee at the end of the meal to hang out a little longer. Just a quick sitdown meal with my wife and maybe some of our kids, we're not getting dessert.

On rare occasion the wife and I will split one but it either has to be an interesting dessert (I don't care about cheesecake or bread pudding after a large meal), or creme brulee, which is my wife's favorite.

i honestly don't know why they even put these on the menu

They are one of the biggest money makers for restaurants along with alcohol.

They can be made in advance for pretty cheap in larger quantities and then refrigerated. They add a nice little amount to the total bill.

Places like Pigeon and Whale in New Orleans have got this down to a science with seemingly elaborate desserts that every chick wants to take a picture of and get

Dessert, especially for a celebration, is a requirement. How else am I going to reach my 600lb goal?

It usually is, but I appreciate you pointing out the flaws in my reading.

You said “this is why you don’t get desserts in restaurants” after telling a story about someone who ordered a dessert, loved it, and wanted to get a recipe.

Yep, I would hate to have that experience.

It seems like it’s more important to you to point out you know someone who owns a restaurant.

You're doing it wrong, get dessert first!

At good restaurants, my wife and I at least get one to split.

The wife and I take quarterly overnight trips without the kids. Usually a nice resort or high end hotel. We make dinner reservations at least one night and dress appropriately. We eat lightly and always leave with dessert. As it's an adult weekend amongst adults, we like to have that treat in the mini-fridge for a late night snack.

Casual dining? Almost never unless its an ice cream or bakery shop with the kids.
