How did you like the wheel horse?
Posted on 2/25/22 at 10:11 pm to wickowick
It's my new go-to cheap one. Smooth but with enough bite for me to enjoy it. Also won't hurt tomorrow based on previous experience. There are an obscene number of whisky stones in this one because I kept getting distracted and ended up adding more to chill it down a little. I guess I could have just set it on the deck rail for 10 minutes.

I really don’t know why, but I much prefer my whiskey room temperature. It’s a bit off putting when ice cold, IMO.

After a solid week in Austin and a new edition to the No8 family time for a top shelf nite cap

I like it 50s-60 or so, it definitely wasn't near ice cold. It's just the equilibrium between the 0F stones and the 65F liquid. So, low 50s.

but where to start that's along the same path I've recently discovered?
You gotta go down that expensive rabbit hole of trial and error. That Woodford Double Oaked Ryno is drinking is a good one. Sagamore Spirits Double Oaked Rye is great. A personal favorite is Widow Jane 10 yr old. Wild Turkey 101 is a standard IMO.

what else fits my preferences?
Judging by the bottles you said you liked, I’d suggest Eagle Rare. Now it’s a bit tougher to find these days but keep an eye out for it and it should pop up at some point. I just grabbed a bottle at my local Winn Dixie the other day for $33. That’s twice this month I’ve seen it there. Also I’d suggest Blue Note. It’s a lighter proof, sweeter tasting bourbon that I think would fit your profile. It’s about a $30 bottle as well. When you say you liked Wild Turkey, where you referring to the 101 or the standard release? The 101 is a bit higher proof vs the other bottles you liked that’s why I ask.

It's safe to say I'm sold on OC now. Not that they've got them on shelves around here, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy at MSRP. 3pd
