Be sure to check out Trastevere when in Rome, not necessarily for booze, but it’s a cool little neighborhood on the river. Good restaurants there too.

That's an incredible trip. I have done rome to all the way north thoroughly, but that's it. Next trip is south.

Will do. Didn’t even think of this, but yeah I’ll roll with it. Plan to price shipping costs vs check in, since check in baggage is a deposit to the prison wallet

Would love to do this, but my wife is a teacher so she can’t take enough time of too fo north and south. She a Prosecco purist, so she really wants to head north for a Prosecco tour.

Florence is one of my favorite cities, but that’s as far north as I’ve been.

Florence is absolutely incredible. I can’t make a trip to Italy and not spend time in Florence/Tuscany

We did barolo/barbaresco, Milan, Turin, modena, bologna, etc on our last trip there. Ate at osteria Francesca the year before they got ranked number one in the world. Incredible, but give me Piedmont and white truffles/barberesco all day long.

And Milan's aperitivo hour rivals or surpasses any happy hour in the world.

Unfortunately, this was about 4 years ago, and those days are long gone. I remember my wife being so pissed when I told her I spent $1k on booze... and my first thought was “HA, don’t care!” Lol

Yeah this was nice while it lasted.

seems like a lot of sourced TN booze is now coming from Tennessee Distilling Group, which is like the MGP of Tennessee.

Yeah about four years ago. Somehow it took 3-4 years before everyone figured out that Costco was in the game.

Yea they used to just put it in the glass case with no limit. Sam’s as well. Unk got Sam’s in Nola to hold a pvw20 for him just by calling and talking to whoever was first to answer the phone. A buddy of mine went and picked it up for him

I miss those days. Not so much because I’d get several pappys and btac bottles a year at mato but because the juice back then was better than what is on the shelf now. Everyone cashing in at the expense of quality. Been watching it go this route for years.

Just don't drive in Florence. I took a cooking class there. It was great. The 5 bottles of wine didn't hurt. :)

Hophead I’m glad to hear you liked the Lap10, the force is strong with this one!

Will give it another shot today.
Took a small sip. I have an amateur palette but it has a rough first taste. Surprisingly smooth finish (maybe due to harsh first bite). However, it has a lingering smoke taste that is more like a cigarette than a sweet bbq smoke. Better than the Oregon pride though. But that doesn't say much. Not worth $40 and we probably won't drink it. Will save it for others to experience I think.

Worst driving for me was Rome and Pisa. Although I did accidentally drive through a building in Florence

NOLA, I've heard this from a lot of big collectors. They say anything post 2012 tastes far inferior to anything produced before. Especially with the Van Winkle line. I haven't ever had the chance to compare, so I wouldn't know, lol.

I see it more that they are trying to keep up with demand. With a finite supply each year, they need to maximize this or else be out of the market. The only way to do this is to proof down barrels or lower age statements.

It does suck, but it's the nature of the bourbon boom unfortunately. Here's hoping that rum takes over soon. Trends never last, and they are especially short lived with today's limited attention spanned culture.

I can see it that way too. But first and foremost they are a business. They slowly remove age statements like eagle rare...10y on the neck out in front...then that’s moved to 10y on the back label...then that’s removed. Or was that Elijah crag...or both.

Then they come out more LE bottles that cost more and are aged 10-12 years.

It may be a mix of both
