So I took advantage of Martin Wine's gift card promo and decided to splurge on a bottle I've wanted for a couple years.
Haven't opened it yet but plan to do so closer to Christmas since it's my gift to myself.

Got an email from the Buffalo Trace barrel selection program. Is this impossible to get a barrel you want? Not sure if this is even something I'd want to do but signed up for it a while back.
quote:
The window of opportunity for SBS members to order a barrel of bourbon will begin on 12/01/21 at 12pm EST. SBS Day!
SBS Day is when we refresh our inventory, always falling on the first Wednesday in December at 12 p.m. E.T. It's the day when brands that are currently sold out are replenished, and your annual opportunity to visit one of Sazerac's world-class distilleries to hand pick your very own, one-of-a-kind barrel.
Our barrels range in age from a few months all the way up to 50 years old. As such, availability is limited as we wait for barrels to mature to their fullest potential. We are taking necessary steps to help increase supply and catch up with the demand, however, we have found no substitute for aging. As a result, each brand has a fixed number of barrels available. Barrels are expected to sell out immediately. And due to overwhelming demand, we limit one barrel per person. Once gone, they'll be sold out for the year.
If you'd like to visit the distillery as a part of your barrel pick experience, it's important to have dates in mind beforehand. However, while supply is extremely limited, you won't lose your place in line once an order is started, as you'll have 10 minutes to complete the ordering process. In other words, take your time when selecting your preferred dates.
Notes About the order window.
A limited number of barrels from each brand that are currently sold out on the website will be available to order on December 1st at 12pm EST.
At that time, members can place orders for those brands (schedule a visit to the distillery or have us select a barrel for you).
Each brand has a fixed number of barrels available. Once a brand hits its designated quota, it will be sold out for the year.
Barrels are expected to sell out very quickly.
You do not need to have a retail partner when ordering. If you can submit your order and secure a barrel, the next step you will need to take is to select a retailer to legally complete your purchase.

Do you have a licka license? I don't know if BT has a route to sell direct to a consumer or what that program is that you signed up for, but regardless of any of that the answer is yes. What ever it is...you say yes if you are able to go and pick out a barrel of any BT product.

Yeh...I don't keep up as much anymore, but 700 is my guess
Yep 2018 was batch 7 and its around that price. I keep up with them because its insane what some things go for. Current release PVW23s are 4500 ffs.

It seems like I would have to partner with a retail outlet based on the last sentence in the email. Doesn't seem like a huge deal but I could be wrong?

Ah yea I tapered off on my reading as I was getting to the bottom
So you would have to find a retailer that would be willing to let you run the barrel through them. Not sure how the allocation part works but if they would have to use their allocation I bet it wont be a easy task.
If it doesn't matter about the retailers allocation since you signed up and can get one, I have a License and we can run it through my outfit. If you want to find out more and I can help feel free to send me a email nolagt3 at gmail
Edit to add a reply I got from a buddy who has done it before. Give it a try I will be your retailer if you are somewhat close to Laffy (id be willing to drive some).

Nope no allocation bs. But they are doing it this Wednesday at 12est. You have log on they give you a number in que. I think last year there was 10 or 12 thousand people. If you get a top 100/200 I think you get a barrel pretty much

Thanks for the info. I’ll see what happens Wednesday. I suppose I’ll buy it if I get a good number. I’m in Nola - so we could make that work.

Not sure of the specifics with this offer, but I bought a barrel of Knob Creek several years back. Tasted 8 different barrels, and chose the best one. Some of the barrels were really pretty bad, but the one I settled on was exceptional. Anyway, they bottle and pack into cases the barrel you choose, and ship it to a local retailer near you. You also get the empty barrel. Got about 155 bottles from the purchase. Highly recommend this.

Got some more info from Buffalo Trace. So there is no surprise IF you get one, I have to mark it up 6%, that is the state minimum, and I have to charge sales tax but that is all I would do. I would be game to travel to help pick on out and id also help front $ if need be for the barrel...except for the scotch...don't pick the scotch

Future availability for bourbon will be communicated to the members of Single Barrel Select. If you have not already signed up, please create an account at www.singlebarrelselect.com. See the attached ‘How It Works’ guide to learn more about the Single Barrel Select program and process all together. The selection day for the 2022 barrels will be December 1, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. (noon) Eastern Time. You have to be in your account ready to hit refresh at noon and hope that you are able to reserve a barrel. The barrels will show up available and then sold out almost immediately. Las years release sold out in less than two minutes.

Appreciate it - I will let you know what happens tomorrow. I'm pretty much sticking to bourbon (blantons down to fp). Obviously those will be quickest gone so will see what happens.
Fully expecting to not get anything.
