These days the distiller will send a sample of like 5 barrels samples from different parts of a rickhouse to a retail store and they will get together with a group of people , usually peeps that know their bourbon and decide which barrel to pick.
That’s a selling point for me then. If I find a hand selected bottle and I think it’s great I’m more likely to continue buying that merchants hand selects based on that.
I live in the Prairieville area. What are some of the best locals who do hand selects?

Barrel picks aren’t always better than standard juice, but many can be, and some picks end up being special.
I got three ER picks from three different stores in the BR area back in December. The one from Hokus Pokus is the best bottle of bourbon I got this year. The other two are not as good as a garden variety ER.

I live in Nola but I think Hokus Pokus is a spot my boys in that area goto

Really glad I was able to snag a big bottle of that one.
FPD was OF1910, 2PD was EW BOB. No pics tonight

Handle is my last one from that pick. The Zup pick is pretty damn close to the Elios.

2PD. Looks like this one is gonna bite the dust this weekend.

I really love everything Aberlour does. One of the best Speyside distilleries.
Let’s see what this one is about.

Paps did you get around to telling TA you reject your bottle of Blantons and want me to take yours as well? I thought I recall that

Speaking of barrel selections, we went to the Jack Daniels distillery today to do just that. We just opened a new office in Nashville, and we wanted our give aways to represent something Tennessee. What better than a Tennessee staple.
Due to Covid, we were not able to select in the rickhouses. Instead, they preselected flavor profiles from different barrels and we selected the barrel from there. It was a very cool experience. Our tasting guide had worked at JD for 45 years and is a local legend named Goose. Everything was first class and the JD campus is beautiful. Here are a few pics I snapped.

Eta: not sure if y’all noticed, but LSU is making the trip to Lexington Kentucky this fall and I’d like to make a road trip and do the bourbon trail while there. Would be great if we could get a group together or if someone has gone can give me some advice on things to do/ not to do.

Hunting season is over, time for another gathering. I’ll bring some good brown and t00f if you’re sure you’re ready for that

From speaking to liquor guys, this is my take as well. Typically you are given 3-6 barrels to sample and you choose from there. Pre-covid you could send a small group of folks to the distillery, now days they usually just send samples.

There was a WLW at my local spot yesterday, but in pretty sure he's way overpriced on it. I think he said $89. What is retail on that one?

That’s correct. Pre covid you had options. Either get some samples from your rep, go to the distillery and sample there, or sometimes you get to meet up with the cool people who run things and sample with them at a local bar. Only barrel so far but what a great experience talking to Mr Russle and sampling his hooch. Really nice guy and tons of stories.
