Interesting mystery flight last night. The 4 of us that did it all agreed that #1 was best and really, really good. We liked all 4 with 3 being controversial. Here's the bewildering part. #1 turned out to be plain old Buffalo Trace. I have had too many bottles of that to number, but never one that tasted like this. It was so good I asked if they knew where the other bottles were from that shipment. No luck. Anyway, the rest were Penelope Wheated, some Dark Arts bourbon(pretty complex and loved by one of the ladies) and an Elijah Craig Barrel Proof that I think began with A.

If there are any Still Austin fans close to Destrehan, Cypress Lakes Country Club just got a decent barrel pick in.

Still Austin Single Barrel pick that a few other members of the club and myself picked for our member guest golf tournament last weekend. We are all very pleased with how it came out. Surprisingly sweet for a cask strength. They’re now available for purchase at the restaurant at $70 a bottle if anyone is interested!

FPD Fresh Crack Old Dominick Bonded
Tennessee Whiskey I’ve been waiting to find a bottle around Lafayette for a while..the first female master distiller in Tennessee. Priced at $52.13 after tax. 76% Corn 13% Rye 11% Malted Barley. It has a heavy char in white oak barrels. It’s good stuff! Yea it’s a bourbon.

Do single malts not have the same peatiness as a scotch? I don’t like the smokiness. Would a single malt whiskey have the same profile?

The term scotch is an umbrella term for several different types of scotch whiskey generally associated with a particular region of Scotland. Peated scotches come from the Islay region but the other regions, Highlands, Lowlands , Speyside etc almost never have noticeable peat in their scotches. Now most scotches are finished in sherry barrels, even peated scotches. Single Malt means the scotch is produced at one Distillery although it can be and often is blended from different barrels, so it's not single barrel.

What’s a good bourbon gateway scotch? I’ve not liked any I’ve tried. I hear that compass box is an easy drinker

That is correct, this one happens to be a Single Cask. This has some peat smoke but not like an Islay smoke bomb.

ETA gateway scotches, Glenlivet, Glenornagie, Aberlour. These are gonna be more fruit forward with zero smoke. They still won’t be as sweet as bourbon. You’ll get apples, pears, oranges vanilla, for the most part.

They do many different blends and they are amazing but some of them are peated so you have to do your research. Personally I love peated but also love Sherry bombs which are very easy drinkers. Glenmorangie 12 yr is only about $55 and and excellent sherry barrel finished easy drinker, one of my faves.

There is none, frick scotch. Even the good ones still have an odd finish.
