The bottle gets better and better as it opens up. It kind of becomes a whole new whiskey by the halfway point. I've found that is a lot of Weller 107 picks as well.

Going to Kyoto, Japan on Saturday and will be there a week. Mostly a bourbon drinker. Any suggestions on Japanese whiskey’s to try or something that may resemble traditional bourbon?

Keep your eyes open for Wild Turkey 101 12 year, it's a Japanese only release.

I don't have any other suggestions on Japanese whiskey

First impression is that it's 35-40 dollar whiskey dressed in a nice bottle. It's not bad but there are a lot of better options for the price (or below). Hopefully it'll get better with some air.

Second is something that never disappoints
