Just to clarify, he wasn't aging in a barrel he was aging in a gallon ball jar not completely sealed with charred oak staves.
Surface area plays a huge role; temperature, quality of the mash/distillate, etc. also play roles Surface area is one of the biggest variables. If you use one of the small 1-2L barrels, if you leave it more than a few weeks, it will get overoaked. The oak staves do a lot of the same thing and many folks have started doing that at home. Many of the smaller, craft distilleries use smaller barrels for shorter periods of time due to space constraints.

I made a stop in Laffy on Tuesday. Nothing but Benchmark...everywhere. Nothing else. I was disappointed.

Totally makes sense. The higher the surface area to volume the quicker the oaking process.

temperature,
I watched a video on Buffalo Trace's website (I don't know if it's still up) and the master distiller stated that aging basically stops at 50 degrees. He also said Buffalo Trace solves the problem by heating their racking warehouse to 60 degrees during the winter and what that means is a 8 year Buffalo Trace is equivalent to another 10 year bourbon aged in an unheated bonded warehouse.

Benchmark is probably some of the same factory made stuff sold in expensive bottles.
ETA: if the label says "produced by" then it probably comes from Indiana's MGP Ingredients factory.
If the label says "distilled by", then it comes from a "real" distillery.

MGP makes straight rye that is used by NDPs to sell in the US. MGP does not make bourbon that is sold under any label in the US

Your link does nothing to refute his statement. The article just mentions MGP's whiskey produced.....doesn't say anything about bourbon.

Another article:
Here's another company that does bulk spirits including bourbon for marketing companies: LINK

Lawrenceburg, Indiana (not to be confused with bourbon-locale Lawrenceburg, Kentucky) is home to a massive brick complex that cranks out mega-industrial quantities of beverage-grade alcohol. The factory, once a Seagram distillery, has changed hands over the decades and was most recently acquired by food-ingredient corporation MGP. It is now a one-stop shop for marketers who want to bottle their own brands of spirits without having to distill the product themselves. MGP sells them bulk vodka and gin, as well as a large selection of whiskies, including bourbons of varying recipes, wheat whiskey, corn whiskey, and rye. (They also make “food grade industrial alcohol” used in everything from solvents and antiseptics to fungicides.) Their products are well-made, but hardly what one thinks of as artisanal. And yet, much of the whiskey now being sold as the hand-crafted product of micro-distilleries actually comes from this one Indiana factory.

No whiskey/whisky tonight, only an oatmeal stout. But I did pick up the Balvenie Caribbean cask today and will try it tomorrow night.

Pretty sure Pinhook Bourbon sells a bourbon that is sourced from MGP. The actual alcohol is distilled there. But I guess it is not technically bourbon until Pinhook puts it into their barrels.
