I just talked to them about getting one for Andy and he has one so Andy I'll be picking one up for you. I forgot to ask tho how many he had left...do you want me to call him back...if so how many would you want and when are you coming back to LA or you would need it shipped?

they've got a bottle of Hirsch 16 upstairs. $45/glass but wife (no pics) decided to treat me.

I won some money at Harrah's a few weeks ago and decided to treat myself. I know people are going to say I'm crazy, but: I didn't like it.

As usual there are plenty of variables: I had been drinking a lot of the day, and it was my 2nd whiskey but I preferred the ORVW 10 107 that I had right after it. I'm very happy I didn't like it because I love Pappy 23 and probably won't buy a bottle unless I win the lottery or strike oil.

I enjoyed it a lot, but it was definitely different...weird way to describe it, but it's the "Inception" of whiskeys, changing levels and profiles throughout consumption.

I'm a wheated Weller/Pappy guy, and the Hirsch was nothing like it, including the PVW 23 which is the most complex of the Pappys. Only issue is that I couldn't truly compare it since I finished my first bottle of 23 in 2012 and am holding out on opening my 2nd one.

Really glad I tried it, as it's about as limited a commodity as there is....especially on a random tourist's dime!

For you big timers, if you are a scotch and bourbon guy, would you say most of the PVW are better than Balvenie 21? I guess if you could choose to sip on one or the other which would you choose? I know it is apples and oranges but I tend to reach for the scotch over bourbon most of the time. I've never had any of the PVW and am just curious.

Good question...the answer can likely only be answered by someone who enjoys bourbon and scotch equally.

I hadn't had the Balvenie 21, but have had the 14 and would say it's one of the best scotches I've tried. I'm much more a bourbon guy, so I would be biased.

I do believe that the Pappys are harder to find than most scotches simply because the supply from 20-23 years ago is so low. The European/world market for scotch probably didn't dip as low as bourbon did in the 80's & 90's. Most distilleries are now upping their supply (conservatively at least) in hopes of avoiding the shortages on old bourbon we have today...but without making so much that demand doesn't support it.
